Many species of plants and animals in Colombia are threatened or endangered due to hunting, logging, and deforestation, with over 1,200 species of plants and animals affected. The regions of Meta and Chocó have especially high numbers of unique and endemic species at risk due to their forests containing distribution ranges for 9 animal species worldwide and 106 endemic Colombian animal species. Conservation efforts should focus on agricultural systems that incorporate native species of each region to promote both productive use and conservation.

gered and 640 species are vulnerable in both

It should be noted that the deforestation nuclei coincide with the
limited distribution worldwide of nine animal species and 106 en-
demics of Colombia. The situation is worrisome and critical in Me-
ta and Chocó, because they concentrate a greater number of uni-
que species, 16 and 81 respectively.
"It is necessary to focus on production systems that take into account
the native species of each place, not only for their productive use, but
to include them within agroforestry systems that allow their conserva-
tion," says Professor Hetor Fabio Ramos.
