Once upon a time, there was a millionaire surnamed Lai who
lived in the central part of Taiwan in a town called Shigang.
He had so many houses and land that no one knew exactly
how rich he was, and people only knew that he owned half of
the street and half of the stores on that street. So people gave
him the nickname “Half-Street Lai.”

有一天,外地的牧羊人经过石岗镇
时,碰到大雷雨,就和羊群一起在
屋檐下避雨。
One day, a traveling shepherd passed by the town of Shigang,
and was halted by a thunderstorm. He and his herd then hid
from the rain in the front porch of a building.

牧羊人哀求等大雨过后再走,赖半
街不肯,牧羊人只好走到隔壁去躲
雨,
But the shepherd begged him to let him stay till the rain
stopped. Half-Street Lai wouldn’t budge and wanted him to
go, so the shepherd had no choice but to walk to another
building to hide.

又冷又饿的赖半街,一口气便把稀
饭吃光,并说:「没想到地瓜稀饭
这么好吃。」
Half-Street Lai was very hungry and very cold. He
slurped all the food in a minute. Afterward, he said to
the young man, “I never knew that sweet potato rice
porridge could be this delicious!”

从此以后,赖半街不再自私、小气,
不但变得慷慨大方,还常常拿钱出
来帮助困苦的人,成为地方上的大
善人。
From that day on, Half-Street Lai was a changed man. He
was no longer selfish, or stingy. He now is a very generous
man, and helps needy people by offering them financial
support. He became a very famous locally as a kind-hearted
person.
