2. Introduction
Definition: cyber bullying- the use of technologies, with the intent
of harassing or harming the reputation of another person.
Quote: “Everybody, everywhere has a bullying problem’ virtual
harassment outside of school can be emotionally and mentally
damaging” (Decatur Daily)
Statistic: 85% of parents with teenagers 13-17, that are or were
cyber bullied reported that their children had social media
accounts.
3. Why do teens cyber bully?
“Because they can, and they have access. They don’t have the
understanding of long term effects and how once you bully you can
never take it back. Kids cyber bully because it levels the playing
field for power, everyone is equally powerful on the internet and
can remain anonymous.” Ms. Prince
40% of a guidance counselor job deals with cyber bullying
4. How does cyber bullying affect the
victim?
Someone that is bullied can go into a deep depression and even
have suicidal thoughts.
The teen gets bullied day after day and has very low self esteem.
They begin to think that no one is their friend and on their side and
this continues to get worse over time.
5. Why do teens feel the need to be so
mean?
Revenge or amusement are the two biggest reasons that teens are
mean on the internet.
If they type something instead of saying it, they don’t feel the same
personal sense of responsibility.
“One of the worst punishments is reading what you said online to
your parents.” Ms. Prince
6. How does cyber bullying get to the
point of killing oneself?
The bullying just wears down the teen mentally when they are
bullied for a long time, until it gets to a point where it is so bad that
they feel they have to end their life.
There is 24 hours of bullying with no stop time. When bullying
occured years ago there was only face -to-face bullying and talking
on the phone which would stop until the next day. Theres a ripple
effect, monstrous proportions and people feel they can’t escape.
7. What is the percentage of kids who are
cyber bullied?
The numbers increase daily, girls more than boys. Size doesn’t
matter online, and girls bully in groups/cliques.
You should think about what you say online and the affect it has on
others...
