Source Temperatures < 350ºF
 For sources below 350ºF, ORC is the only commercial option available
 Technologies such as forward osmosis are neither commercial, nor do they match
performance, price, or availability
 Examples of < 350ºF heat sources are geothermal, amine regeneration, “waste”
steam, co-produced fluids, and refinery product streams
Source Temperatures 350ºF – 550ºF
 In this temperature range, ORC performance matches or exceeds steam Rankine
cycles, as well as being simpler to operate and maintain
 Examples of 350ºF – 550ºF heat sources are geothermal, refinery product streams,
and industrial furnace exhaust
Plant Sizes < 5000 kWe
 In this size range, ORC is simpler to operate and maintain than a sub-atmospheric
steam plant that requires boiler operators, water treatment, chemicals, and non-
condensable gas equipment
Air Cooled Applications
 Air cooling steam is a large and expensive proposition; cooling water permits are
increasingly difficult to obtain; using ORC in place of steam or to condense steam from
a backpressure steam turbogenerator at ~30 psia is a viable option

All rights reserved. Source Temperatures < 350ºF  For sources below 350ºF, ORC is the only commercial option available  Technologies such as forward osmosis are neither commercial, nor do they match performance, price, or availability  Examples of < 350ºF heat sources are geothermal, amine regeneration, “waste” steam, co-produced fluids, and refinery product streams Source Temperatures 350ºF – 550ºF  In this temperature range, ORC performance matches or exceeds steam Rankine cycles, as well as being simpler to operate and maintain  Examples of 350ºF – 550ºF heat sources are geothermal, refinery product streams, and industrial furnace exhaust Plant Sizes < 5000 kWe  In this size range, ORC is simpler to operate and maintain than a sub-atmospheric steam plant that requires boiler operators, water treatment, chemicals, and non- condensable gas equipment Air Cooled Applications  Air cooling steam is a large and expensive proposition; cooling water permits are increasingly difficult to obtain; using ORC in place of steam or to condense steam from a backpressure steam turbogenerator at ~30 psia is a viable option Where Does ORC Have a Technology Advantage?
