2. Passive Voice?
If there is PASSIVE voice, there is ACTIVE
voice. Active Voice is a sentence which we
normally use and find in conversation:
O I always buy salad in school canteen.
O My mom gave me a piece of cake.
O My grandfather built this house in 1900.
O Many people read his works.
O My friends discuss English every
Wednesday.
3. How can the sentences be passive?
Many people read his works.
Subj. Vpr. Obj.
This is ACTIVE voice because the spotlighted idea is Many
people
If we want to emphasize the OBJECT, then we put word
(phrases) identified as Object to SUBJECT position.
his works read Many people
And the VERB pattern must be changed, too.
read => are read
his works are read (by) Many people
4. Notes:
Verb tense has no change
but…
It must agree with Subject
Jeanny shares her stories to her classmates
Jeanny here is one person and
Verb agrees with Subject shares
Jeanny’s stories are shared to her classmates
Her stories (Jeanny’s stories) indicates the story is more
than one, so we need to make the Verb agree to the NEW
Subject ARE SHARED
