Presenter: Ross Ward Organisation: The University of Edinburgh Description: Learning analytics is primarily focused on staff accessing student data to gauge performance, predict student outcomes, and make interventions where necessary. This session will provide an overview of the work that the University has done in researching and developing a bespoke learning analytics building block called, ‘Data for Students’ that allows students to access information about their course - using click counts and comparison of grades against the cohort. The session will report on the outputs of our initial pilot studies and feedback from staff and students who have used the tool.

Online Evaluations: The Student Experience

The Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) at Charles Darwin University is a semester long university preparation program for students unable to directly enter undergraduate study. With a cohort consisting of 80% of students studying online, Blackboard plays a central role in engaging and enabling TEP students with the necessary skills and knowledge for undergraduate study. To increase student engagement in TEP, a number of initiatives have been put in place this year designed to maximise the use of interactive digital technologies and changing pedagogies. One of the main drivers for these new initiatives was the analysis of data captured in Blackboard showing that early engagement by students increases their likelihood of successfully completing TEP as well as identifying critical points of engagement during the semester. To maximise early engagement and prepare students for TEP studies, the first week of study for all new TEP students has been devoted to a new online initiative called TEP Start which is the focus of this presentation. TEP Start was specifically developed for the online learner to improve the student experience, build their confidence and give them the skills to succeed. TEP Start was developed with the expectation that students would engage and interact with the learning materials on Blackboard, thus moving away from the traditional method of ‘content based’ online learning. This online engagement includes classes hosted in Collaborate Ultra, game-based learning activities and short micro-lectures. Hosted on a dedicated Blackboard site, TEP Start was specifically developed using design principles such as colour coding, visual hierarchy, repetition, images, icons in addition to limited text; all to direct the student’s eye to what is important and to influence how they interact with the content. The initial results of the TEP Start initiative are highly encouraging. The majority of students completed all components of TEP Start and the feedback from students and staff on TEP Start is overwhelmingly positive.

With the advent of RSS, faculty now have the ability to push instructional content to students in a variety of new ways, therefore automating the content distribution process. Electronic portfolios enable students and faculty to assemble, present, and share information online for documenting academic growth, career evaluation, and course preparation. The Blackboard Portfolio Tool is a new tool currently being piloted that is bundled with the Blackboard Content System and allows users to collect and organize files and other digital content representative of their learning into custom Web pages. This online session offered 10/8/10 shared the capabilities of this new Blackboard tool and details on how to participate in the pilot of this tool during the fall 2010 semester. The Blackboard Exemplary Course Program began in 2000 with the goal of identifying and disseminating best practices for designing engaging online courses. Using an established rubric for online course quality, faculty and course designers can evaluate how well their course conforms to proven online teaching best practices for Course Design, Interaction and Collaboration, Assessment, and Learner Support. During this online session offered 12/17/13, we explored suggested best practices included in the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program Rubric for designing engaging online courses. Practical tips for building a course in Blackboard that meets the established quality benchmarks and links to sample award-winning course tours were provided. We also covered the steps and associated deadlines for faculty interested in submitting their course for consideration as a Blackboard Exemplary Course. This workshop was geared toward an audience already familiar with the basic online teaching tools available in Blackboard.

Explicit alignment of course assessment with learning outcomes encourages students to evidence their learning and consider how assessment develops their professional skills beyond their study program. ePortfolios were used to address professional skills building and career preparedness for Medical Science undergraduates at UNSW Australia. Processes in Disease (2nd yr foundational) and Molecular Basis of Inflammation and Inflammation (3rd yr specialist) Pathology courses used Mahara ePortfolio in Moodle, linked to assessment tasks that build authentic written research communication skills: an annotated bibliography (2nd yr) and a research laboratory report (3rd yr). We measured changes seen upon student engagement with an ePortfolio using: a) two sets of marking criteria assessing the writing and associated co-curricular reflection tasks and b) skills and career ability surveys capturing improved student confidence, acquired skills and perceptions of themselves as professionals. Student reflective practice and professional skills in research thinking and writing were observed with ePortfolio use.

In it I am asking her to help me move forward in my present job function to pursuing a higher position at Blue Shield. Hello Jane, As you know I completed my Bachelor program and received my degree in August of 2018, well as of January 8, 2019 I have decided to continue my education to study for my Master’s degree. With my masters I would like to apply my knowledge and stay within the company that I have been with for 11 years and move up in positions here at Blue Shield. I have gained so much knowledge here that I would hate to leave lose all that plus the years I have been here to move forward in another career. I know you have given me more responsibilities with the inventory I would like to eventually take my studies and become a lead or maybe even one day a supervisor. The online program I am in is a 36 credit course, 16 month course, with the studies I will learn how to be more flexible how to be more open to ideas and how to apply those ideas to the current healthcare system ("What To Expect In The MHA", 2018). With the things changing here at Blue Shield and how the ability to process a claim within one day is in the future of the company to lessen the aged inventory I am hoping I would be able to bring some new ideas to research on how to make things go smoothly to strive to get the inventory down to where it is more manageable. Along my education journey here at University of Phoenix I am hoping you would be able to assess me along my way. I know that Blue Shield has a management trainee course that I would be interested in getting involved with and I am hoping you can assist me on how to apply to that and be able to achieve my academic dreams of becoming a Healthcare Administrator. The new Blackboard Portfolio tool released with Blackboard learn in April 2014 is much-improved and provides an easy-to-use platform for students to demonstrate and reflect upon what they have learned throughout their university career. Northern Illinois University (NIU) implemented the portfolios campus-wide during 2015, and it was used by thousands of students in a relatively short time. This presentation at BbWorld16 will provide an overview of the portfolio tool, strategies for developing portfolios that serve different purposes, and best practices for institutional adoption. Sample portfolios and exemplars from faculty who are using Blackboard portfolios in their classes will be shared, along with NIU’s campus-wide implementation process. Specific steps taken to prepare faculty and staff for each service pack were shared, including the initiatives underway in conjunction with NIU's upgrade from Learn 9.1 SP8 to SP11 in June 2013. Social bookmarking is a technique of storing, classifying, sharing and searching links through the practice of folksonomic tagging using a cloud-based service. This online session offered 10/31/2012 introduced the several popular free social bookmarking tools and explore practical applications for implementing social bookmarking activities in the classroom.
