2. I’ve had some great experiences in the past… I earned my BA in Anthropology. I first learned the power of a hands-on lesson while doing field school in New Mexico. 5 weeks in the desert will do that to you! Pre-MAT
3. I did graduate work in Physical Anthropology … That’s the biology side of the field that includes genetics, osteology, primatology, forensics … the fun stuff! After two years though, I decided that I didn’t want to spend the next decade in a room full of skeletons (literally). So, I spent the next ten years working in various youth organizations and camps. I created and ran programs about all the fun things that I like to do… Hiking, birds, outdoors, geology, archaeology, marine biology, zoology, genetics … .the list goes on….
4. I’ve also unmercifully used my three nieces as guinea pigs… No, that’s my real guinea pig… Cinnamon! Bird Banding Geocaching Skeleton Making Fossil Collecting Walking in the Woods
5. Today I teach Anthropology and Sociology part time at SUNY JCC and online through SUNY GCC, and subject my classes to a wide variety of student-centered and inquiry-based learning activities! Learning the Scientific Method Experiencing the importance of opposable thumbs Dissecting owl pellets Analyzing Skeletal material
6. In my classroom I try to integrate 21 st technology into many of our projects. For students to report classroom data. To create a classroom web site and blog. To post class lectures.
7. During the Summer I continue to work with youth as the Summer Camp Director for Camp Fire USA- Alaska Council. There, I have the chance to see some amazing wildlife…. … and teach lessons in wildlife and conservation to campers and staff.
