Deep Ocean: The truth of the Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea
Everyone might have once imagined dark environments and scary creatures which live in the deep
sea. These childlike dreams are visualized in the popular novel, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the
Sea. In the novel, the main character, Pierre Aronnax, searches for a mysterious sea monster while
fighting with scary undersea creatures. Although many undersea creatures have been depicted in the
novel, one of the striking deep sea creatures would be a giant octopus. This octopus is depicted as a
scary creatures that threatens the main character. Many people might think the creatures are fake,
but the giant octopus exists, which is also well known by today's scientists.
The deep sea normally is interpreted as the lowest layer in the ocean, existing below the thermocline
and above the seabed, at a depth of 6,000 feet or more. As shown in the novel, the deep sea has been
a mysterious and interesting theme for a long time. The subject area of the deep sea attracts many
readers; therefore, it became a topic of many pieces of literature and science magazines. As a result,
a lot of research has focused on investigating the deep sea. However, why do we have to conduct
such research?
Deep sea research was accelerated during World War II. The war brought many scientific
developments in various fields; oceanography was not an exception. World War II caused a Belgium

The GaAs then is develop to GaAsP and GaP [6],
Particles of light or photons emitted when energy/current introduced to GaAs. Generally,
GaAs gives out light in the infrared range, not visible to the human eye, but with the introduction of
phosphorus, a mixed crystal of gallium arsenide phosphide "GaAsP" is created [6]. The light that is
visible to the human eye, ranging from red to yellow, is obtain based on the proportional quantity of
phosphorus. The material combination gallium phosphide "GaP" was developed in addition to
GaAsP. A variety of colours can be obtain if the crystal compound doped properly [6].
For instance, red obtained when zinc–oxygen added to GaP, and green is produce when nitrogen
added. In most of the semiconductor LED die materials, added elements like beryllium, nitrogen,
and zinc are generally not specified in the general material structure [6][7].
Next generation of LED technology is changing to gallium nitrate –based LED, this type of LED is
widely used in many illumination application like automobile light, office light, industry light and
other commercial light in daily life. Due to the GaN, based LED has high efficiency in producing
the white light, so the GaN is suitable material choose in producing the white light.
However, the research to develop the performance of this type of LED

Mecheric: The Greek God
Mecheric, the god of logic and math, mechanics, and technology, was loved by all including the
gods. He was a brilliant god, created by all the gods and emerged from Hestia's fireplace. His
favorite god was Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The Olympians sent him down to Earth to help
and teach the humans on Earth. Mecheric flew down to the Aegean Sea. He requested Poseidon for a
hippocampus, a beautiful fish–tailed horse. He rode on his pure white hippocampus till he reached
the charming shores of Athens. He thanked the hippocampus for its kind services and started
wandering through the night. When the people woke up, they were surprised to see this heavenly
being wandering on the roads and through the markets. They asked, "Who are you, ... Show more

He was awarded a spot on Mount Olympus between Athena and Hephaestus. This promotion made
his heart even more compassionate, to a point where it was an eminent threat. He decided to view
life on Earth from the perspective of a mortal, for he felt like he had been enthralled by the heavenly
pleasures. He descended to Earth and started roaming through the lands of Athens. It was a very nice
city and he found himself his own home. The people took notice of this strange new villager but
didn't think too much of him. At night he dropped gifts at houses that belonged to people who were
honest and considerate. One day he was walking through the night when he noticed that there was a
strange little girl wandering through the streets in rags. When he asked who he was, she replied, "I
am the daughter of the Olympians; I emerged from the fireplace of Hestia. My name is Merthos"
Merthos was the god of science and engineering.
Mecheric knew that he had found his sister. He said, "I am the son of the Olympians; I emerged
from the fires of Hestia. I am Mecheric." They both were rejoicing and decided to help whoever
needed help before they left to their home. Through their extreme compassion they almost revealed
the secrets of life to the nearby wildlife. As soon as they thought about it, a lightning bolt flashed

The History of Submarines Essay
The History of Submarines
Wouldn't it be fun to ride a torpedo, or drive a nuclear reactor around underwater? In this research
paper I am going to illustrate the ingenius submarine. The submarine is one of the most important
strategic and tactical weapons systems of the 20th Century, and this importance will increase in the
21st Century. The tiny, leaking, creaking, and unsafe submarine boats of the 1890's, displacing under
two hundred tons and carrying a handful of men and a few torpedoes have grown into massive,
sophisticated and deadly weapons systems.
These displacing as much as 26,000 tons, carrying a crew of over a hundred and armed with missiles
which can destroy large areas of the world. Every day hundreds of submarines are ... Show more

The sail stands about 20 feet high. It holds the periscopes and the radar and radio antennas. The top
of the sail also serves as the bridge, from which the captain directs the submarine when on surface.
Steel fins called diving planes stick out from both sides of the sail or bow and from the stern.
These diving planes guide the ship to different depths. One or two propellers in the stern drive the
submarine, also rudders above and below the propellers steer the craft. The earliest inventors had no
other way but manpower to propel their submarines. Initially, this involved oars, then came
propellers turned by hand, either by a single person, as in David Bushnell's Turtle². Or by several
people turning a crank, as in a Confederate Hunley and the German Brandtaucher (meaning
"Incendiary Diver") in the mid–19th Century compressed–air was used as were electrical
accumulators, both were of limited endurance and required the submarine to return to the port to
recharge, which was tactically unacceptable. There were also a number of attempts to harness steam,
not only for surface propulsion, but also to provide power when submerged, using stored energy
devises, but none worked satisfactorily.Eventually it was realized that the solution was to combine
the efficiency of the batteries for underwater propulsion and some form of power which could be
used on the surface, both to propel the submarine and recharge its batteries.
Steam was used tried several

Volcanoes and Volcanology Essay
Volcanoes can be one of the most destructive forces on Earth. It is estimated that some
500 million people live near active volcanoes (Lutgens and Tarbuck, 2013). Of the Earth's known
volcanoes, 70 can be expected to erupt each year with at least one large eruption each decade
(Lutgens & Tarbuck, 2013). As populations continue to increase and more people are attracted to the
beauty surrounding these areas, the immediate threat to humans from these sometimes sleeping
giants grows. Due to this, the study of volcanoes and the service that volcanologists provide to the
public by way of information and predictions on activity is immeasurable. Named for the Roman
god Vulcan, volcanoes have both intrigued and frightened mankind for ... Show more content on

There are four major types of study that make up a volcanologist or team of volcanologist. These
include physical volcanologists, geophysicists, geodesic volcanologists and geochemists (What does
a volcanologist do?, n.d.). Physical volcanologists study the actual processes that make up a
volcanic eruption.
They also study the deposits made from the eruption. Where the rocks from the eruption were
distributed and what their makeup are. A geochemist can also determine the chemical makeup of
these deposits. By studying deposits and lava flows from past eruptions, it can assist in the
prediction of where the lava will flow, how far the debris field will be and how far the ash will
scatter in new eruptions. As retired volcanologist Robert Tilling so aptly described it, "the present is
the key to the past – In a sense, we're detectives, trying to decipher clues that rocks tell us." (What
does a volcanologist do?, n.d. para. 1). Volcano geodesists study the inner workings of a volcano,
basically, its plumbing. While a physical volcanologist and geochemist can study the results of a
volcanic eruption, without knowing the inner workings of a volcano, where the magma chambers
are located and which direction they go, it is sometimes difficult to know whether or not an eruption
will take place at all (Poland, Hamburger, & Newman, 2006). Geophysicists study the Earth and

terrains. Earth is considered unique in the sense due to the fact that it's the only planet in the
universe known to host actual life forms. Our planet is inhabited by millions of diverse species who
dwell in different regions and landscapes. Over the course of time and through various advances in
technology, many different sciences have emerged on the scene furthering mankind's understanding
of their environment as a whole. These discoveries have also provided a great deal of insight into the
significant impact both humans and nature play in shaping environmental conditions as well.

Mount Aso is an active volcano in the center of Kyushu in Aso–Kuju National Park. This volcanic
feature was formed by four massive caldera eruptions and is a product of subduction of the Pacific
Plate under the Eurasian Plate. These two plates are at a convergent boundary. Its ancient caldera
ranks among the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over
100 kilometers. A caldera is defined as a cauldron–like volcanic feature located on large central
volcanoes. This is a special kind of volcanic crater created by a magma chamber being emptied.
Mount Aso has also produced more explosive eruptions than any other volcano in the world. Aso is
a cinder–cone volcano which contains felsic lava/magma. It also contains bomb–rich basaltic
pyroclastic. Most of the explosions generated by this volcano are viewed as violent producing ash
and blocks. Mount Aso has not erected lava flows in historic times.
Only 8 eruptions have resulted in fatalities over the years. The majority of these deaths are tourists
on the rim of the cone. It is also important to note that frequent activity makes it extremely
dangerous to live near this feature. Another hazard one must take into consideration is inhaling
volcanic gas seeping from this monstrosity.

The blast was preceded by two months of intense activity that included over 10,000 earthquakes,
hundreds of small phreatic (steam blasts) , explosions and the north side bulge. A magnitude 5.1
earthquake below the volcano at 8:32 am started the eruption. MSH is still a potentially dangerous
and active volcano even though it has been quiet since 1995. In the last 515 years there have been
four major eruptions and dozens of lesser eruptions. Two of the eruptions were only two years apart.
In 1480, the eruption was about five times larger than the one in May 1980. There have been even
larger eruptions during MSH' 50,000 year lifetime. After the May 18, 1980 eruption, there have been
five smaller explosive eruptions over a five month period. Since then, there have been 16 dome

square miles of land was leveled. The edges of this area also lost their forested areas from the heat

Essay on Mount Etna in Italy
1.0 Topic Definition
Volcanic Eruption, which means the sudden occurrence of a violent discharge of steam and volcanic
material, is one of the catastrophes in human history. It can devastate enormous areas, as well as
people. The eruption of the Vesuvius in AD 79 buried the cities of Herculaneum, Pompeii and
Stabiae with ashes and mud. (Oracle think quest) The majority of ancient volcanoes, like Mt.
Vesuvius in Italy and Mt. Tambora in Indonesia are all dormant volcanoes now. However, Mt. Etna,
which have been erupting for millions of years, still remaining active now. (Sicily Life) From 4 May

It begins with low–level activity and continuous summit activity and a series of flank eruption are
following. The last phase is commonly the most voluminous. (Behncke, B., Neri, M., 2003) The
trend of Mt. Etna eruption is becoming similar to that of the 17th century.
Although Mt. Etna is said to eruption since 1500 BC, according to Michael Abrams, Remo Bianchi
and David Pieri, only historical records for the last 350 years are accurate. Records before year 1650
are incomplete and controversial.
3.0 Science Organization
The eruption of Mt. Etna belongs to the volcanology, which is a study of volcanoes. It also relates to
geology in that the most convincing reason of the eruption of Mt. Etna is plate tectonic setting. Mt.
Etna is related to the subduction of the African plate under the Eurasian plate. (Jessica Ball) There
are also other theories explains the eruption, including rifting processes, a hot spot and intersection
of structural breaks in the crust. (Jessica Ball)
In order to predict the volcanic eruption, seismograph monitoring is often used. Seismograph
monitoring is the machine that creates seismograph which records the changing earth tremors
because of rising magma, which indicates volcanic eruption. (Oracle Think quest) As a result, the
eruption of Mt. Etna also associates with seismology. (See figure 2)

enjoyment and motivation in the lesson. Students today have grown up with technology and enjoy
being a part of it, whether it is watching it or interacting with it. "Children of the 21st century have
been part of a multi–media world from birth, and as a result they are comfortable with such
technologies and this experience can be exploited in the learning environment." (Hall & Higgins,
2005, p. 106) Students are also more willing to participate in class when there is an interactive white
board. One reason for this is that students enjoy touching the board and manipulating objects. Most
students are familiar with technology and find some of the activities on the board similar to video
games that they are accustom to playing. Students who are at the board have the opportunity to
interact with concepts being taught and this interaction, can lead to classroom discussion. Students
want to be apart of what they are learning and feel that their thoughts are valued, one way for this to
happen is through open classroom discussion. When a student feels as if they have an opinion of
what is being learned instead of just being handed the information from the teacher, they experience
an increase in motivation in their learning process.

Car Mount Advantages And Disadvantages
Car–Mounts Car mounts are specifically designed to have your mobile device in a place where it
can be seen so that firstly it can be used as a mapping device and secondly because of the stringent
hands free laws that you can see who is calling and at the same time be able to talk to the person
who has called. Once it has been mounted you are also able to touch the screen which allows you to
carry out basic commands while you are driving. The smartphone technology is trending to voice
commands and having it mounted in front of you will make it a lot easier when you are driving.
Features Most people will buy a universal cell phone car mount because that way the whole family
can use the device and you will not be restricted to use one phone a consideration if you decide to
upgrade. You need to consider the type of mounting mechanism the car–mount uses as they vary.
The car mount will either be a suction type for the windshield or dashboard or will clip onto the
front ventilator so it is up to you where you would like to position your mobile device Even though
the car–mount is universal make sure that it will conform to the size of your phone How well it can

The suction pad has added gel to increase the suction strength and will attach securely to the
windscreen and the dashboard even if the dashboard is slightly textured. After a while, if the suction
pad is not working to your satisfaction then simply wipe it clean with warm water, let it dry and it
will be like new. The clamp will pretty much hold any cell phone stretching from 1,97" to 3,94" with
an added advantage of having a rubber backing to prevent any scratches to your valuable device.
Whether you place it on the windscreen or the dashboard you are able to view and access your
phone to you like because of the 180–degree

Mount St. Helens Research Paper
On the morning of May 18, 1980, the United States of America experienced its deadliest and most
destructive volcanic eruption in history. Briefly succeeding a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, an
enormous slab of Mount St. Helens northern flank collapsed in a massive debris avalanche. This
landslide was the largest to transpire on Earth in recorded history and caused the volcanoes magma
system to depressurize. With the cap of the mountain removed, superheated gases and rock
fragments blasted through the side of the mountain (USDA, 2005). The lateral blast accelerated at
speeds of 480 km per hour and reached temperatures of 350 °C, creating an immense area of leveled
and scorched forestry. Surges of water from melting snow and glaciers capping ... Show more

Helens will occur. The main issue is that it is impossible to prevent it, or stop it once an eruption has
begun. However, procedures can be established to reduce the lives lost or damage to property should
a future event occur. Technology for monitoring volcanoes has advanced dramatically over the last
36 years. The seismometers used in 1980 are prehistoric compared to todays equipment. Nowadays,
seismometers can hear low–frequency indications of fluid moving deep below the Earth's surface
(Galvin, 2007). Also, scientists with the use of aircrafts with geochemistry advancements can
monitor and detect gases rising from volcanos summits. Remote monitoring equipment is used 24
hours a day and 365 days a year by the USGS (USGS, 2014). With that regard, the success of a
monitoring system depends primarily on how fast detection occurs and the time needed to notify
public if evacuation s required. Although, monitoring might detect possible eruption but the
magnitude of an eruption is still difficult to determine (Crandell and Mullineaux,

Chapter 3, as well as the article "A Fresh Look at Mount St. Helens" is very interesting. Chapter 3,
section 1 covers the Earth as a system, the structure of the Earth, and Earth affects like earthquakes,
or volcanic eruptions like the one on May 18th, 1980 in Washington State. Mount St. Helens was
once covered with vegetation and small ponds. It has been nearly thirty years since one of the largest
eruptions ever observed. The explosion blew the side of Mount St. Helens and lasted nine hours.

Volcanoes : The Volcano Of Tambora

November 9, 2014
Volcanoes
Many people underestimate the power of volcanoes and the amount of damage they can do to a
country, state, city, or town. A volcano is a mountain that extends down to a caldera which is a pool
like are of magma in between the mantle and the crust in the Earth. It in a sense is a massive hole in
the middle of the crust and mantle of the Earth where magma can erupt from and eventually make
its way to the Earth's surface. Volcanoes are estimated to kill almost 1,000 people per year and
caused $99,000,000 worth of economic damages from 1980 to 2008. When an active volcano erupts
its "danger zone" is about a 20 mile radius around the volcano itself, which ends up killing people,
destroying houses, land, etc.
Known worldwide is the volcano of Tambora. On April 5th, 1815, many people didn't think it would
be their last day of their life. This volcano has one of the most tragic stories with the most deaths
recorded by one single volcano in history. The volcano of Tambora killed 80,000 people directly and
indirectly (Farrell,J). Most of the people that died were from Sumbawa Island and a lot of people
died later on due to starvation because the lack of food and disease. This volcano is located on
Sumbawa Island which is on the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago. What made it so
dangerous was that there were no signs that there would be such a large eruption much less one at all
for thousands of years. So

Essay on Investigating Plate Margins
Investigating Plate Margins Plate margins are the edges of the plates, where all the power of nature
is released in earthquakes and volcanoes. There are three main types of plate margins: – Spreading
Boundaries There are two types of spreading boundary Ridges, where new rock is formed, pushing
the plates apart, and Rift, where the plates pull apart, and the earth between them sinks. On the
ocean floor the plates are spreading. All along the mid ocean ridge, volcanic activity is pouring new
lava out onto the seabed. As it hardens, it becomes new rock, gradually pushing the crust, on either
side of it away. Another type of spreading boundary is the African Rift Valley. As the two ... Show

In a deformation zone the area where the plates meet is being crushed and pushed upwards. It
happens when the two plates are almost equal in weight. Instead of one plate being pushed down
under the other, they smash into each other, causing the edges to rise upwards. It is very similar to
two cars crashing together, head–on. As they hit each other, the front ends crumple, and lift upwards.
In this type of boundary huge mountain ranges are formed. The best example of this is the
Himalayan Mountains. They were formed when the Indian Plate crashed into the European Plate.
The two are still being forced into each other, and the Himalayan Mountains are slowly becoming
taller. Transverse Boundaries The last type of boundary is neither spreading nor colliding. The edges
are sliding past each other, sideways. As they slide past each other they cause a huge crack in the
surface of the earth. This crack is known as a fault line. Probably the best–known example of this is
the San Andreas Fault, which is found in Western California. As they slide past each other they
sometimes cause earthquakes. Areas with fault lines have more frequent earthquakes than other
places. Where do volcanoes occur? Volcanoes usually occur on the edges of plates, similar to where
earthquakes occur. A lot of

Volcanic Hazard Depend Primarily on Physical Factors?...
Volcanic hazard depend primarily on physical factors? Discuss.
Volcanic eruptions happen all across the surface of the globe, many argue that if controlled and
monitored they would have little effect on the population. However others argue that some volcanic
events are too powerful or unpredictable to control.
Firstly I do not agree with this view I believe it is more to do with the human decisions that make a
volcanic eruption a hazard. For example we can see this in such volcanic events such as Mount
Pelée which erupted in 1902. In the town of St Pierre there was early warning or an eruption from
the volcano. From mid–April animals in the area started dying from poisonous gas realised from the
volcano. In early may more signs where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the hazard had been mapped out by scientist when the early warning signs occurred it was
planned to be presented to officials the day after the disaster. This shows how human decisions to
live on the past debris of the lahars and also the hazard map not being produce in time lead to deaths
which could have been avoided.
However human can also have positive effects on volcano eruptions the main way of protecting
people is to monitor the volcano an evacuate the people to a safe place a good example of this the
Chaiten earthquake on May 2008 in Chile. Chile has one of the longest volcano chains in the world
due to the destructive plate boundary where the Pacific Ocean plate was subducting beneath the
South American continental plate. Due to this is meant that the Chilean government where able to
put plans in place in case of an eruption. When early signs showed that a volcano eruption was
going to happen, the response was to evacuate people in nearby settlements where 4000 people were
evacuated and another 3900 people were evacuated with forcible evacuation orders to make people
move who refused to leave. When the volcano erupted in May there was only one death due to stress
of the evacuation and very few injuries direct from the volcano. This shows how early planning and
evacuation can save many lives

Auckland, a highly populated city in New Zealand experiences traffic problems frequently. This
problems needs to be resolved through development of a road system that would tackle challenges
imposed by the population. Auckland Transport manages road projects in the city. One of the
projects in Auckland city that is underway by Auckland Transport (AT) is the upgrade of Dominion
Road project. AT inherited this project from the Auckland city council, which had earlier undertaken
public consultation for a proposed upgrade to Dominion Road. Key concerns from the earlier
consultation undertaken by the Auckland City Council included loss of on–street parking, and
concerns that use of bus lanes by other vehicles would create four–lane highway. AT in its design
includes the concerns raised and has engaged both the public, including the potentially affected
residents, and other key stakeholders from the government and the private sector. AT has opened a
feedback process in which views about the improvement of Dominion road are collected to be
examined and possibly to be approved and included in the final design.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Gopro In Men's Health Magazine
It seems fair to argue that GoPro is at the pinnacle of action based video technology; however, does
owning one increase your chances of reaching heroic stature? Is the GoPro the world's most
versatile camera? The HERO3 camera, shown hurtling around a speedway in Men's Health
Magazine, says yes. Although the GoPro name holds its fair share of ethos credibility, this
advertisement focuses more so on the pathos and logos aspects of persuasion. This GoPro
advertisement in Men's Health Magazine, not only claims to be the world's most versatile camera, it
also challenges the targeted demographic to "be a hero"; therefore, implying not only that their
camera is far superior, but that the purchase of this product will also make the consumer heroic. ...

vast collection of video exploits. Yet another logical fallacy lies in the statement "world's most
versatile camera". GoPro, albeit seemingly versatile, with all the camera's specs and options on
proud display, leaves the audience uninformed about what the competition may

Roman women were washing their clothes in the River Tiber, below which animal fats from the
sacrifices ran down into the river and created a soapy clay mixture. They found out that using the
same cleansing substance, their clothes were getting cleaner, easier. From that time we know soap as
soap (soap history.net). After the founding of "soap" from the Babylonians, the Egyptians also
bathed regularly. They made soap by combining animal and vegetable oils that contain alkaline salts
so it can make a soap–like material but they used it for treating skin diseases and also for washing.
At about that exact time, Moses gave personal laws to the Israelites, and he also said cleanliness to
health and religious purification were very related. Then the Israelites knew that mixing ashes and
oils made a type of gel. The Greeks did not use soap like the Babylonians, or the Egyptians. They

did bathing. In 312 B.C, Romans built their first baths with water from their aqueducts. Their baths

Part A: Email /Text Problems
The current technological age that uses the social media has led various problems in writing and

Examples of components made using this process include gears and bearings (Kaushish, 2008).
The steps involved in powder metallurgy include production of powders, powder mixing,
compaction, sintering and finally secondary operations. Powder production is the first step, and it
involves the application of different methods (such as grinding or atomization) to obtain powders
from metals or non–metals. The powder's chemical composition, size and shape are analyzed
(Kaushish, 2008). Powders are usually potential hazards, such as being flammable, and thus they
should be handled with safety precaution.
Mixing of powders usually involves the addition of alloying elements, pressing lubricant, binders,
and other substances. The uniform distribution of the particles is emphasized in order to obtain a
processed part with uniform density. Compaction involves forming the mixed powder into a
compact of desirable shape and size. Whereby, the powder is pressed in a rigid enclosure which
comprises of die and punches. Sintering involves using a protective atmosphere to heat the compact
to a temperature below the melting point of the major constituent. The secondary operations are
finally used to obtain a good finish.
Conclusively, powder metallurgy is a crucial manufacturing process that enables the production of
components which cannot be produced

those that the United States were using which alarmed the air force. The following year in 1974 the
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funded research into the needed radar cross

The Warming Of The Climate System
Q 1. How do we Know climate system is warming?
Warming of the climate system is unequivocal. Since 1950's many of the observed changes are
unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of
snow and ice have diminished, and sea level has risen. Additionally most of these climate changes
are due to very small variations in Earth's orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet
receives. Earth–orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see
the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a
global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate.
The signal of climate change include rise of sea level, surface temperature rise ,glacier retreats,
shrinking ice sheets, warming of ocean ,declining artic sea ice ,increase in Antarctic sea ice ,increase
in extreme events ,decrease in the amount of snow of snow and ice ,increase in concentration of

The Relief and Intaglio Printmaking Process
Describe the Relief Printmaking process. List an artist who uses the form of printmaking. Refer to
this video for more information.
The Relief Printmaking process is a printmaking process in which someone covers a block of
material, such as wood, in ink. Then they proceed to deeply etch out the inked surface in the form of
a design. Once that is done, they lay paper over the block with pressure so that the ink is shared
generously all over the paper. When the paper is removed, the design will have been transferred and
they will have the finished artwork. Using a block of wood is known as Woodcut Relief
Printmaking, or "Woodcuts". There are also Wood Engravings, where a stronger type of wood is
used so an artist can engrave an image into the surface rather than cut it out. In my opinion, the
second step of the process could be left to remain as the art itself. In the video showing the process
as Lyell Castonguay created his piece, "Hydra", I thought the design in the ink coated wood looked
more bold and real than the actually piece. But this may only be for the reason that the finished
product lacked color in comparison. Of course, Lyell isn't the only artist who uses this printmaking
process. Another artist who uses Relief Printmaking is Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai used the same
process to create his color woodcut piece called "South Wind, Clear Sky", a portrayal of Mount Fuji.

Abstract: Volcanic eruptions can be disastrous and deadly. It is, therefore, important to look back at
prior eruptions and compare them to present eruptions in order to draw conclusions on what could
be done to mitigate loss of life and destruction. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD on
Pompeii and surrounding areas proved to be catastrophic because of the location of the volcano and
especially since citizens were not aware that an active volcano was in their midst. By examining the

There was some precursory activity leading up to the climactic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79
AD. The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius during the discussed period is known as a Plinian
eruption, named after Pliny the Younger who was the only surviving witness of the events of 79 AD.
(Sigurdsson, 1982) A Plinian eruption is known to be hugely explosive. In 62 AD, seventeen years
prior to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples and especially Pompeii suffered a
destructive and powerful earthquake. This earthquake is speculated to have been a sign that magma
had moved up the volcano's chamber towards the surface and fractured the edifice of Vesuvius.
(Sigurdsson, 1982)
An eyewitness from 62 AD, known as Seneca the Younger, reported 'tainted air' responsible for
killing 600 sheep. Modern day scientists speculate that this 'tainted air' described by Seneca the
Younger may have been Carbon Dioxide released by the volcano implying new activity from within
Vesuvius, which in modern day society could have acted as a predictor of an oncoming eruption.
(Surrell, 2010)
Another precursor involved a second foreshock in 64 AD. Suetonius Tranquillus and Tacitus, whom

According to the website of US Navy museum, in August 1953, Piccard finished development of the
Bathyscaph Trieste, and it was placed in the sea for the first time. After that in 1960, the
Bathyscaphe Trieste reached the deepest known depth in the ocean, 35,800 feet in the Challenger
Deep. People may have trouble imagining the depth of the Challenger Deep reached. If the highest
mountain, Mount Everest (about 29,000 feet), was submerged to the depth explored by the
Challenger Deep, its peak would be more than a mile beneath the surface. (The Official U.S. Navy
Museums). As time passed, the technology of submergence surprisingly developed, and now most of
the submergence is conducted with unman probes.@@
A unique environment exists in the deep sea which is totally different from the sea that people
normally can experience. Then, why is the environment so different between deep sea and the
surface of the sea? There are three major factors that make the deep sea so mysterious and unique:
light, temperature, and pressure.
According to the blog of Marine Bio–tech, the deep sea is cloaked in perpetual darkness because
light cannot penetrate the great amount of water. Therefore, in order to adapt to the dark
environment, most of the fish have larger than average tubular eyes with only rod cell. Also, many
deep–sea organisms, even bacteria, developed bioluminescence, which is a visible light made by
living creatures. Some

Simplicity. Durability. Flexibility. Those are the hallmarks of a great action camera, and Contour's
new entry, the ContourROAM VHR1600 fits the bill. Being waterproof doesn't hurt either. The
ROAM is an entry–level version of Contour's highly regarded GPS and HD video cameras, with the
emphasis on convenience and ease–of–use. Contour cams are a favorite of outdoors and action
sports enthusiasts, and the ROAM should be another hit with this crowd. This is no birthday party
camera. It's designed for seriously active people who want to record their adventures but don't want
to stop and set up every shot. Contour makes that easy with a simplified on–off switch that slides up
the length of the camera. Whether you're halfway up a rock face or ... Show more content on

The ROAM is designed to stand up to rain, snow, mud and accidents. An aluminum shell protects
the technology from the weather and falls, while sealed gaskets protect from splashing and keep the
camera waterproof up to one metre deep. Divers and surfers can add an aluminum casing that
protects the camera up to sixty metres deep. Hands–free mode is a must with sport cameras, of
course, but the ContourROAM VHR1600 makes this necessity a real virtue. The camera comes with
two mounts, a profile mount and rotating surface mount. It's also compatible with Contour's sports–
and vehicle–specific camera mounts, allowing you to easily attach it to a helmet, handlebars, a gun–
sight, roll bars or a canoe. Able to hold the camera through bumps and jolts, each mount is also
designed to position the camera to the best shooting angle for its specific activity. Additional
features include a multi–direction microphone to pick up environmental sounds as well as
commentary, plus USB connectivity that makes it easy to upload video and still pictures to social
media, photo or video sharing sites, and your personal website. Controls are easy and intuitive, with
two push buttons controlling reset, camera memory and high–definition mode

Mt. Everest Essay
Mount Everest 1996
Abstract
In 1996 two expedition adventure organizations joined operations to climb Mount Everest. Mount
Everest is an unpredictable "800 pound gorilla" that demands respect from all that would attempt to
achieve a fraternal summit acquisition. The pitfalls that await an assuming prepared expert can turn
a well laid out plan into a treacherous and lethal reality. The expedition to reach the summit on May
10th, 1996 is a blue print of the defiant forces of nature and human error.
Two companies joined together to make the journey to the summit of Mount Everest in the spring of
1996. Both companies had expert climbers and guides that had reached the ... Show more content on

The weak points stand out far more now than they did in 1996, way more. The decision that their
would be only one person to call all the shots regardless of what anyone else thought was a big sign
of possible failure. There did not seem to be any emphasis on customer satisfaction. History is
littered with the ruins of countries and people who followed blindly or wrongly without question,
discussion, or refusal to agree. No decision was made to have a second in command if the leader
became incapacitated. Arrogance had no role in an expedition of this magnitude. Experienced
climbers with concerns were stifled and kept their opinions to themselves. The whole idea of
recruiting multiple experienced personnel in any organization is to allow them to make the
organization better. It was clear that there could only be one alpha dog in this expedition. People
who hid the fact that they were too unfit or healthy to make the attempt should have stepped down.
Anyone who can not make it on their own becomes a liability. There appeared to be a disregard for
the needs of the clients and the climbers who had reservations. The communication devices were
either too old or too few to accomplish the task at hand. Even with the limited technology that was
used, the application of it would have had to be deployed precisely to achieve appropriate

He was a brilliant god, created by all the gods and emerged from Hestia's fireplace. His favorite god was Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The Olympians sent him down to Earth to help and teach the humans on Earth. Mecheric flew down to the Aegean Sea. He requested Poseidon for a hippocampus, a beautiful fish–tailed horse. He rode on his pure white hippocampus till he reached the charming shores of Athens. He thanked the hippocampus for its kind services and started wandering through the night. He descended to Earth and started roaming through the lands of Athens. It was a very nice city and he found himself his own home. The people took notice of this strange new villager but didn't think too much of him. At night he dropped gifts at houses that belonged to people who were honest and considerate. One day he was walking through the night when he noticed that there was a strange little girl wandering through the streets in rags. • 7. The History of Submarines Essay The History of Submarines Wouldn't it be fun to ride a torpedo, or drive a nuclear reactor around underwater? In this research paper I am going to illustrate the ingenius submarine. The submarine is one of the most important strategic and tactical weapons systems of the 20th Century, and this importance will increase in the 21st Century. The tiny, leaking, creaking, and unsafe submarine boats of the 1890's, displacing under two hundred tons and carrying a handful of men and a few torpedoes have grown into massive, sophisticated and deadly weapons systems. These displacing as much as 26,000 tons, carrying a crew of over a hundred and armed with missiles which can destroy large areas of the world. Every day hundreds of submarines are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sail stands about 20 feet high. It holds the periscopes and the radar and radio antennas. The top of the sail also serves as the bridge, from which the captain directs the submarine when on surface. Steel fins called diving planes stick out from both sides of the sail or bow and from the stern. These diving planes guide the ship to different depths. One or two propellers in the stern drive the submarine, also rudders above and below the propellers steer the craft. The earliest inventors had no other way but manpower to propel their submarines. Initially, this involved oars, then came propellers turned by hand, either by a single person, as in David Bushnell's Turtle². Or by several people turning a crank, as in a Confederate Hunley and the German Brandtaucher (meaning "Incendiary Diver") in the mid–19th Century compressed–air was used as were electrical accumulators, both were of limited endurance and required the submarine to return to the port to recharge, which was tactically unacceptable. There were also a number of attempts to harness steam, not only for surface propulsion, but also to provide power when submerged, using stored energy devises, but none worked satisfactorily.Eventually it was realized that the solution was to combine the efficiency of the batteries for underwater propulsion and some form of power which could be used on the surface, both to propel the submarine and recharge its batteries. • 9. Volcanoes and Volcanology Essay Volcanoes can be one of the most destructive forces on Earth. It is estimated that some 500 million people live near active volcanoes (Lutgens and Tarbuck, 2013). Of the Earth's known volcanoes, 70 can be expected to erupt each year with at least one large eruption each decade (Lutgens & Tarbuck, 2013). As populations continue to increase and more people are attracted to the beauty surrounding these areas, the immediate threat to humans from these sometimes sleeping giants grows. Due to this, the study of volcanoes and the service that volcanologists provide to the public by way of information and predictions on activity is immeasurable. Named for the Roman god Vulcan, volcanoes have both intrigued and frightened mankind for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are four major types of study that make up a volcanologist or team of volcanologist. These include physical volcanologists, geophysicists, geodesic volcanologists and geochemists (What does a volcanologist do?, n.d.). Physical volcanologists study the actual processes that make up a volcanic eruption. They also study the deposits made from the eruption. Where the rocks from the eruption were distributed and what their makeup are. A geochemist can also determine the chemical makeup of these deposits. By studying deposits and lava flows from past eruptions, it can assist in the prediction of where the lava will flow, how far the debris field will be and how far the ash will scatter in new eruptions. As retired volcanologist Robert Tilling so aptly described it, "the present is the key to the past – In a sense, we're detectives, trying to decipher clues that rocks tell us." (What does a volcanologist do?, n.d. para. 1). Volcano geodesists study the inner workings of a volcano, basically, its plumbing. While a physical volcanologist and geochemist can study the results of a volcanic eruption, without knowing the inner workings of a volcano, where the magma chambers are located and which direction they go, it is sometimes difficult to know whether or not an eruption will take place at all (Poland, Hamburger, & Newman, 2006). This volcanic feature was formed by four massive caldera eruptions and is a product of subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Eurasian Plate. These two plates are at a convergent boundary. Its ancient caldera ranks among the world's largest, with a diameter of up to 25 kilometers and a circumference of over 100 kilometers. A caldera is defined as a cauldron–like volcanic feature located on large central volcanoes. This is a special kind of volcanic crater created by a magma chamber being emptied. Mount Aso has also produced more explosive eruptions than any other volcano in the world. Aso is a cinder–cone volcano which contains felsic lava/magma. It also contains bomb–rich basaltic pyroclastic. Most of the explosions generated by this volcano are viewed as violent producing ash and blocks. Mount Aso has not erected lava flows in historic times. Only 8 eruptions have resulted in fatalities over the years. The majority of these deaths are tourists on the rim of the cone. It is also important to note that frequent activity makes it extremely dangerous to live near this feature. With all of the money being spent on interactive white boards, are they really an effective tool? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many advantages that a student who learns in a classroom with an interactive whiteboard will experience. Students in the class enjoy learning while using the board because it increases their enjoyment and motivation in the lesson. Students today have grown up with technology and enjoy being a part of it, whether it is watching it or interacting with it. "Children of the 21st century have been part of a multi–media world from birth, and as a result they are comfortable with such technologies and this experience can be exploited in the learning environment." (Hall & Higgins, 2005, p. 106) Students are also more willing to participate in class when there is an interactive white board. One reason for this is that students enjoy touching the board and manipulating objects. Most students are familiar with technology and find some of the activities on the board similar to video games that they are accustom to playing. Students who are at the board have the opportunity to interact with concepts being taught and this interaction, can lead to classroom discussion. Students want to be apart of what they are learning and feel that their thoughts are valued, one way for this to happen is through open classroom discussion. • 43. Volcanoes : The Volcano Of Tambora Josh Kleinow Geog 101 Professor Mohler November 9, 2014 Volcanoes Many people underestimate the power of volcanoes and the amount of damage they can do to a country, state, city, or town. A volcano is a mountain that extends down to a caldera which is a pool like are of magma in between the mantle and the crust in the Earth. It in a sense is a massive hole in the middle of the crust and mantle of the Earth where magma can erupt from and eventually make its way to the Earth's surface. Volcanoes are estimated to kill almost 1,000 people per year and caused $99,000,000 worth of economic damages from 1980 to 2008. When an active volcano erupts its "danger zone" is about a 20 mile radius around the volcano itself, which ends up killing people, destroying houses, land, etc. Known worldwide is the volcano of Tambora. On April 5th, 1815, many people didn't think it would be their last day of their life. This volcano has one of the most tragic stories with the most deaths recorded by one single volcano in history. The volcano of Tambora killed 80,000 people directly and indirectly (Farrell,J). Most of the people that died were from Sumbawa Island and a lot of people died later on due to starvation because the lack of food and disease. This volcano is located on Sumbawa Island which is on the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago. What made it so dangerous was that there were no signs that there would be such a large eruption much less one at all for thousands of years. So ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Essay on Investigating Plate Margins Investigating Plate Margins Plate margins are the edges of the plates, where all the power of nature is released in earthquakes and volcanoes. There are three main types of plate margins: – Spreading Boundaries There are two types of spreading boundary Ridges, where new rock is formed, pushing the plates apart, and Rift, where the plates pull apart, and the earth between them sinks. On the ocean floor the plates are spreading. All along the mid ocean ridge, volcanic activity is pouring new lava out onto the seabed. As it hardens, it becomes new rock, gradually pushing the crust, on either side of it away. Another type of spreading boundary is the African Rift Valley. As the two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a deformation zone the area where the plates meet is being crushed and pushed upwards. It happens when the two plates are almost equal in weight. Instead of one plate being pushed down under the other, they smash into each other, causing the edges to rise upwards. It is very similar to two cars crashing together, head–on. As they hit each other, the front ends crumple, and lift upwards. In this type of boundary huge mountain ranges are formed. The best example of this is the Himalayan Mountains. They were formed when the Indian Plate crashed into the European Plate. The two are still being forced into each other, and the Himalayan Mountains are slowly becoming taller. Transverse Boundaries The last type of boundary is neither spreading nor colliding. The edges are sliding past each other, sideways. As they slide past each other they cause a huge crack in the surface of the earth. This crack is known as a fault line. Probably the best–known example of this is the San Andreas Fault, which is found in Western California. As they slide past each other they sometimes cause earthquakes. Areas with fault lines have more frequent earthquakes than other places. Where do volcanoes occur? Volcanoes usually occur on the edges of plates, similar to where earthquakes occur. A lot of ... • 47. Volcanic Hazard Depend Primarily on Physical Factors?... Volcanic hazard depend primarily on physical factors? Discuss. Volcanic eruptions happen all across the surface of the globe, many argue that if controlled and monitored they would have little effect on the population. However others argue that some volcanic events are too powerful or unpredictable to control. Firstly I do not agree with this view I believe it is more to do with the human decisions that make a volcanic eruption a hazard. For example we can see this in such volcanic events such as Mount Pelée which erupted in 1902. In the town of St Pierre there was early warning or an eruption from the volcano. From mid–April animals in the area started dying from poisonous gas realised from the volcano. In early may more signs where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the hazard had been mapped out by scientist when the early warning signs occurred it was planned to be presented to officials the day after the disaster. This shows how human decisions to live on the past debris of the lahars and also the hazard map not being produce in time lead to deaths which could have been avoided. However human can also have positive effects on volcano eruptions the main way of protecting people is to monitor the volcano an evacuate the people to a safe place a good example of this the Chaiten earthquake on May 2008 in Chile. Chile has one of the longest volcano chains in the world due to the destructive plate boundary where the Pacific Ocean plate was subducting beneath the South American continental plate. Due to this is meant that the Chilean government where able to put plans in place in case of an eruption. When early signs showed that a volcano eruption was going to happen, the response was to evacuate people in nearby settlements where 4000 people were evacuated and another 3900 people were evacuated with forcible evacuation orders to make people move who refused to leave. When the volcano erupted in May there was only one death due to stress of the evacuation and very few injuries direct from the volcano. This shows how early planning and evacuation can save many lives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Is the GoPro the world's most versatile camera? The HERO3 camera, shown hurtling around a speedway in Men's Health Magazine, says yes. Although the GoPro name holds its fair share of ethos credibility, this advertisement focuses more so on the pathos and logos aspects of persuasion. The powder's chemical composition, size and shape are analyzed (Kaushish, 2008). Powders are usually potential hazards, such as being flammable, and thus they should be handled with safety precaution. Since 1950's many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and sea level has risen. Additionally most of these climate changes are due to very small variations in Earth's orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives. Earth–orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate. The signal of climate change include rise of sea level, surface temperature rise ,glacier retreats, shrinking ice sheets, warming of ocean ,declining artic sea ice ,increase in Antarctic sea ice ,increase in extreme events ,decrease in the amount of snow of snow and ice ,increase in concentration of CHGS.Each indicator described below has been extensively studied over the past several decades, and was captured from many different data sets and technologies. The Relief Printmaking process is a printmaking process in which someone covers a block of material, such as wood, in ink. Then they proceed to deeply etch out the inked surface in the form of a design. Once that is done, they lay paper over the block with pressure so that the ink is shared generously all over the paper. When the paper is removed, the design will have been transferred and they will have the finished artwork. Using a block of wood is known as Woodcut Relief Printmaking, or "Woodcuts". There are also Wood Engravings, where a stronger type of wood is used so an artist can engrave an image into the surface rather than cut it out. In my opinion, the second step of the process could be left to remain as the art itself. In the video showing the process as Lyell Castonguay created his piece, "Hydra", I thought the design in the ink coated wood looked more bold and real than the actually piece. But this may only be for the reason that the finished product lacked color in comparison. Of course, Lyell isn't the only artist who uses this printmaking process. It is, therefore, important to look back at prior eruptions and compare them to present eruptions in order to draw conclusions on what could be done to mitigate loss of life and destruction. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD on Pompeii and surrounding areas proved to be catastrophic because of the location of the volcano and especially since citizens were not aware that an active volcano was in their midst. (Instituto Nazionale di Geofisica Vulcanologia, n.d.) There was some precursory activity leading up to the climactic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius during the discussed period is known as a Plinian eruption, named after Pliny the Younger who was the only surviving witness of the events of 79 AD. (Sigurdsson, 1982) A Plinian eruption is known to be hugely explosive. In 62 AD, seventeen years prior to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples and especially Pompeii suffered a destructive and powerful earthquake. This earthquake is speculated to have been a sign that magma had moved up the volcano's chamber towards the surface and fractured the edifice of Vesuvius. (Sigurdsson, 1982) An eyewitness from 62 AD, known as Seneca the Younger, reported 'tainted air' responsible for killing 600 sheep. Modern day scientists speculate that this 'tainted air' described by Seneca the Younger may have been Carbon Dioxide released by the volcano implying new activity from within Vesuvius, which in modern day society could have acted as a predictor of an oncoming eruption.
