1. Institutional Aspects Of Horror Trailers
Hash tags: Hash tags are a great example of the modern institutional aspects. Hash
tags, are a way of spreading the word around social media, especially twitter. When
a hash tag goes viral, whenever someone talks about the film or trailer they will add
a hash tag at the end, in the case its #TheQuietOnes. If the hash tag gets really
popular you start trending. Trending, is when the hash tags pop up on the side of the
page with a few other popular hash tags, this is basically free advertising. There are
two types of trending on twitter. It can trend nationally (in your country) or
worldwide (across the whole world). People tend to click on these hash tags to see
why it’s so popular and for general interest.
Inter-titles: Inter-titles, is when a screen with text will appear in trailers to explain
the narrative and create tension, in this case it was ‘inspired by actual events’ they
have used this quote because they are making the movie seem more real. They
connect with the characters more because they thought they were once real.
Furthermore, if you think something is real you tend to get scared because you think
the same might happen to you. This then ends up with you getting twice as scared as
you normally would.
Institutional Logos: Institutional logos are essentially the name of the studio the
made the film. In the cabin in the woods one of the first thing that pops up is
‘Lionsgate’ which is a popular movie company.
This is the logo the company would normally
use, this is because they tend to make more
light films.
This is the logo they used in their horror
movie, The Cabin In The Woods. As you can
see they have changed the colours, to black
and red. This is because black and red
normally connote bad things. Black connotes;
death, darkness and the unknown and red
connote; Blood, violence and gore.
Sometimes a film might say ‘From the producers of …’ they write this because the
audience might be fans of the previous films they worked on. If so they would likely go to
see the film because they like others made by the same people. However this can back
fire because they might not be a fan of the film mentioned so it might put them off seeing
the movie.
A lot of institutional aspects might occur at the end of film trailers; they will normally
show the name of the movie. Secondly they will show the date or season (this
Halloween) to display when the film will be released. Finally, they could show the age
rating of the film.
