Total Questions : 200
25 pretest questions will be randomly placed throughout the new
examination to gather statistical information on the performance of
these questions in order to determine whether they may be used on
future examinations. These 25 pretest items are included in the 200-
question examination, but will not be included in the pass/fail
determination; candidates will be scored on 175 questions.
Diagnostic score reports are now being given to all candidates to
show their overall pass or fail status giving the “Proficient, Moderate
Proficient, Below Proficient” in each domain. Originally to pass the
PMP examination, candidates must answer a minimum of 141 of the
175 scored questions (81%) correctly.
Breaking news: passing rate is adjusted to 106 out of 175 (61%)
correct (announced Dec 1, 2005).

Candidates have a max of three attempts to receive a passing score

Write down all formulas, numbers and acronyms before you start
Multiple choice, one question in one page, read the question and ALL the
answers, choose the BEST answers
Keep notes about difficult questions and mark the questions for future review
Sometimes we just guess one answer and go to next question if we do not know
the contents. Don’t spend time on this kind of question.
Use elimination, only ONE answer is best and correct
Rank the answers by correctness or always true
Look for highlighted qualifiers such as BEST, FIRST, EXCEPT, MOST,
GREATEST, MAJOR, NOT, NEVER, ALWAYS
Look for PMBOK phrases
Ask yourself what would PMBOK say BEFORE experience

How to Renew the Certification
Individuals must accrue 60 PDU’s (Professional Development Unit) in
the 3 year cycle following certification.
– PM’s who do not re-certify with PMI cannot use the title PMP
– PM’s who do not re-certify may lose Senior status
– You have 3 years plus maximum one year to get the 60 PDU’s
PMI will verify the PDU requirements of the PMP upon the last year and
send an email to the request for the PMP renewal
PMP fill out the application for certification renewal & pay the renewal
fees by credit card no later than 90 days after the certification deadline
– PMI member : US$60 (Member fee US$129)
– Non-PMI member : US$150
PMI will mail the updated certificate with the new active certification/CCR
cycle dates within 6-8 weeks after receiving the application

Category 1 – Formal academic education
– Complete degree course in PM
– IBM sponsored MBA in PM
Category 2 – Professional activities & self-directed learning
– Refer guide to category 2 activities in PDC_CCRHANDBOOK
– Maximum 15 self-directed learning PDUs could be earned per CCR cycle
Category 3 – PMI Registered Education Providers/PMI components
– IBM is PMP registered education provider- search Global Campus for following:

Category 4 – Other Providers
– Attend PM courses from non PMI registered providers
Category 5 – Volunteer Services to Professional or Community Organization
– Volunteering PM services in community (max 20 PDUs)

Category 2 is complicated and has several areas which you already do as

Professional Activities
– Author / Co-author for textbook or article
– Speaker at PM event
– Facilitator for PM workshops, events, conferences
– Content developer for PM learning activity
– Practitioner of PM services for more than 1500 hrs per yr (max 15 PDU)
– A committee member of a PM organization maximum 5 PDU per year could be claimed
Self Directed learning (max 15 PDU)
– Mentoring & coaching activities
– Producing education material
– Reading PM books etc.

How to Register PDU’s
Submission can be done in online / fax / email or mail

Regular submission is recommended as the rules do change.
20 PDUs (earned in last year) can be carried forward to next cycle
Submissions are audited so you need to have evidence

Suspended Status
- The candidates are not satisfied Continuing Certification Requirement within the
active certification dates will be placed into suspended status
- There is a maximum “one year” suspension period
- Suspended certification status indicates that the individual may not use the credential
or certification mark
- Certificants who do not meet the overdue requirements within the suspension period
will lose their credential designation
- The date of a certificant’s next CCR cycle will not change after reinstatement to
active status from suspension
