ESL students usually get a hard time editing and proofreading their papers. Teaching them to do so can be very complicated because these students are usually not familiar with some important factors when it comes to writing and using English language especially grammar, flow and vocabularies.

  • 2. ESL students usually get a hard time editing andproofreading their papers. Teaching them to do so canbe very complicated because these students are usuallynot familiar with some important factors when it comesto writing and using English language especiallygrammar, flow and vocabularies. One technique thatcould help them edit their work is to be able todistinguish errors and peer editing is the best way totrain them to edit paper works.
  • 3. By looking and finding errors madeby their peers, it will be easier forthem to look for their own errors.ESL editing is not an easy task todo especially for first time ESLstudents who does not haveenough information about thelanguage. There are ways andstrategies that could help theseESL students do ESL editingeffectively.
  • 4. It includes several techniques such as:Start with the basic words that students usually getconfused and words that are not used correctly like were,where, and we’re or there, they’re, their. These words arecommonly used and people tend to mix it in a way that it’snot being used properly. It is important to let studentsknow their meaning, when and how to use it properly.It is important to let students know about capitalizationrules and what are the words or letters that need to becapitalized.
  • 5. It is also important to teach them with symbols likecomma, period, punctuation, and more. How to usethem and when to use them. One common error that isbeing made when constructing sentences is theincorrect usage of these symbols. A key to teach themwith symbols is providing them with text or writtenexercise that contains incorrect usage of symbols. Havethem read it and make a list of symbols that they thinkare not used properly. With this technique, they caneasily correct their work efficiently.
  • 6. Provide students editing or proofreading exercises like ashort document that has minimal errors and have them spot itfor you to know their progress.Once the students successfully edited the exercises that youhave provided, have him read their own document and see ifthey can spot their own mistakes and correct it. It isimportant to let them know their mistake. For example theyuse a vocabulary or a symbol improperly, let them explainwhy and you can correct them after by providing them withtechniques and strategies that will help them spot errorsquickly and use words and symbols properly.

ESL editing is one strategy that is being taught to ESLstudents to effectively write in English because not only it willprovide them important factors like flow, clarity, grammar,prepositions, vocabulary, correct usage of words andconstruction of sentences, it will also help them to look forcommon errors that is usually being made especially by firsttime ESL students.
