23. RASAYANA AS IMMUNOMODULATOR
o Activation of macrophages for enhanced
generation,
o Stimulation of cytotoxic activity and
Phagocytosis,
o Proliferation of lymphocytes leading to production
and also cytotoxic induction of T- helper &
natural killer (NK) cells and activation of
complement pathways.

• To prove the hypothesis that Rasayana drugs may
have immunity promotion effects, DR.Gurdip
Singh (1982) carried out an experimental study
and showed that Vacha (Acorus columus),
Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) and
Mandukaparni (Hydrocotyle asiatica)
significantly increase the serum humeral antibodies
in rabbits. Out of these three drugs, the effect of
Mandukaparni (Hydrocotyle asiatica) was
considered better.

• Encouraged from the results of the above
mentioned experimental study, further studies
were undertaken on human beings to evaluate the
immunity promotion effects of certain Rasayana
drugs
• Twenty-two patients of allergic rhinitis and
pharyngitis were studied in this series. They were
randomly divided into two groups.
26. .• The patients of first group were administered
powder of Ashwagandha in the dose of 6 gm twice
a day with ghee for a period of one month. The
patients of control group were kept on placebo for
one month.
• The results of this study showed that
Ashwagandha significantly (P<0.001) improving
the serum IgA, IgM and IgG in comparison to
control group. It also observed that the recurrences
of these diseases were preventing by the treatment
ranging from six months to one year.

What is meant by Adaptogens?
The concept of 'Adaptogen' was coined in
1947 by a Russian Scientist, Lazarev. He defined
them as "substances meant to put the organism into a
state of non specific heightened resistance in order to
resist stresses and adapt to extraordinary challenges".
