13. PATHYA
“प्ये सनत गदाततस्य ककमौषधिनिषेवणैैः।
प्येऽसनत गदाततस्य ककमौषधिनिषेवणैैः॥”
- लोलीम्बराज
There is no need of medicine for the one who
follows proper diet.
There is no use of medicine for the one who doesn’t.
Food itself is the best medicine.
Ayurveda has always emphasized the importance
of Food in therapeutics.
Pathya (wholesome diet) has been indicated in
treatment of every disease.
14. Disparity between traditional and modern
concept of nutraceuticals
Ayurveda has clearly differentiated between Ahara Dravya and
Aushadhi Dravya.
Charak has categorized the food items into 12 Ahara Varga while
Aushadhi Varga has been mainly described in 50 Mahakashaya.
In recent times, modern nutraceuticals are being added with medicinal
herbs as active ingredients in various forms e.g. extracts, powders, etc.
This blurs the line between pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.
15. CONCLUSION
