51. AS G321: Foundation Portfolio in MediaDominic Rose 6023 QUESTION 7; Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
*PRESS BUTTON*Hello, I am Dominic Rose, candidate number 6023 and this is my AS G321: Foundation Portfolio in MediaThis is my evaluation of my production*PRESS BUTTON*
*PRESS BUTTON*QUESTION 1;In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?I first reminded myself of the forms and conventions for the music magazine front cover that I found in research and planning. The masthead is eye catching and at the top of the magazine . Encapsulates the magazines audience and purpose.Subjects face can be easily and clearly seen with eye contactLarge dominant full page image of one the main articles in the magazineTitle of main articles is the across the cover in a slanted angleBright colour schemeThumbnails of other important articlesPriceTeasing commentsPuff, with information either advertising the magazine or products to do with the magazineBearing these in mind I deconstructed my magazine front cover*PRESS BUTTTON*I used the forms and conventions ofTagline Main article and image Thumbnails of other articles Puff Masthead Other articlesIn my magazine*PRESS BUTTON*I developed the form and convention of a bright colour scheme.Usually the colour schemes of indie magazines are grey black and white. I decided to use black white blue an yellow. I decided to use blue because this represents my male section of my target audience The blue also replicates a clear sky much like in the summer, this is why I chose to use yellow as this is bright and colourful and relates to the summer issue.*PRESS BUTTON*I challenged the forms and conventions of using a barcode and price as I priced it at £2.50 this is much cheaper than the other magazines in Bauer media, I added a tagline to the price saying ‘still your cheapest music magazine’ showing the magazine has been selling for a while and that the price is a big factor in the magazine this is why it is the same colour as the main article and summer issue headlineI gave my magazine a special issue of summer. As I felt that this would be a huge selling point for a wider audience. I achieved this through the colour scheme and the fact that I used sand in the shot, This often isn’t in the shots of front covers as it is usually just the band. But I felt that this gave the issue a sense of theme to the issue.I chose this image as it shows different shot distances and my main subject has eye contact with the audience. Usually the subject of the image is in front of the title of the magazine. Yet because my image does not allow me to do this I have but my image in front of the title ‘summer issue’ and in front of the barcode so that I am still using this convention.*PRESS BUTTON*
*PRESS BUTTON*Much like the front cover I brought back my forms and conventions from my research and planning For a music magazine contents there should bePage title at the top of the page with date and issue numberQuotes from various articles‘Features’ sectionImages from various articles, the main article having the largest image.Continuous colour scheme throughout Page number giving reference to location of articles, with name of articles.Remembering this I deconstructed my contents page*PRESS BUTTON*In my contents I used the forms and conventions of Continuous colour scheme Editors letter Images from various articles Quotes from various articles Main article and image Institution*PRESS BUTTON*I developed the form and convention of using a subscription box because I I felt that my magazine needed to include another way of distribution within the magazine. It includes the institution of the magazine and where a consumer can contact the magazine. The e-mail is ‘iListenmagazine@bauermedia.co.uk’ showing that it is a British magazine and prominently a magazine not anything else. This subscribtion box shows my front cover on it showing that the front cover and contents are from the same magazine.*PRESS BUTTON*The page title of the magazine is taken from the logo of the magazine which is why the N of inside is larger than the other letters much like the L of iListen is larger than the other letters this shows another link between the front cover and the contents. It also sums up completely what the page is about. It differs from other magazines as they usually have a different font for the page title of the contentsThe page numbers of the magazine as spread across the magazine near there article not in columns like other magazines I wanted this to show that this magazine is breaking the mould and showing something different. The size of the page number is in relevance to the importance of the article so that a consumer can quickly flick to that page.I tried to make my magazine have a great interaction with the audience I did this by adding a section saying that consumers could send in their photos to the magazine. This keeps the influence that it is consumer focused and what they want and there individual magazine. *PRESS BUTTON*
*PRESS BUTTON*I then brought back my forms and conventions of my double page spreadPage title at the top of the page indicating what the page containsHeading or quote that drags across both pagesExtra information about intervieweeContinuous colour scheme throughout double pagesPage numbersAn image taking up almost a whole pageA quote from the article standing out from the rest of the text.I then deconstructed my double page spread*PRESS BUTTON*The forms and conventions used in my magazine areCapital letter at the start of the starting paragraph Quote from artist Extra information on interviewee Continuous colour scheme*PRESS BUTTON*I then developed the form and convention of using question and answer format of my interview by using the same blue for the name ‘the kick’ as the answers to the questions so that an audience could easily relate who was saying what in the interview. I used as much as other magazine when I new person speaks I would use there full name and then after that I would just use there initial so that there would be more room for the interview. I also used a square at the end of the interview to show that it was over. I wrote the interview much like a conversation so that the consumer felt more involved in the interview*PRESS BUTTON*I challenged the form and convention of using an image taking up almost a whole page by using multiple images showing the band. Each image shows a different aspect to there style of music and opions of the band. I have 3 images showng the band as a group and then a single one of each of the band. As they are a new band I wanted to introduce them to the audience and show all the sides of the band. The images do slip over onto the second page and this reduces space for the article this still works because you can see the article carrying on to the next page. The page title and sweeping statement spreads across both pages linking the two pages, the font of the title is also the same as that on the front of the magazine . This sweeping statement grabs the readers attention straight away and sums up what the interview is going to be about. I did not choose to use page numbers in my magazine as I felt that this would take away from the band, my audience will still know what page it is from the contents and the pages either side of the article.*PRESS BUTTON*
*PRESS BUTTON*QUESTION 2;How does your media product representparticular social groups?*PRESS BUTTON*I first brought back my research into the indie stereotype; Indie, short for independent, applies to independent media, usually film or documentary and is also, more commonly, applied to a sub-culture which involves generally music, behaviour and in a few cases, style of dress. These people are also referred to as ‘Indie Kids’ or ‘Indie Rockers’, of which most dislike these terms as it labels them in a certain group. Most dislike the mainstream and the ‘in-trend’ and wear, listen to and do what they feel like without following fashions and rules. Indie is often connected to rockers, and are at a long lasting ‘social war’ with chavs. *PRESS BUTTON*I represent this stereotype through the musicians I chose as these show the type of clothes and trends that indies wear. I also showed this through the new single that the Kick had released called ‘Outspoken Bitch’ as this shows that they are trying to break the mainstream and to something to set them apart from everyone else.I involved the description from urban dictionary as one of the articles in the magazine ‘social war on chavs’The interview itself puts the band in the position of an ‘indie’ as there record label as tried to market them as somebody else. The interview shows the ideologies of an indie as the Kick express that they are a tribute act they are themselves which is something that most indie’s believe that they are different and individual.*PRESS BUTTON*
*PRESS BUTTON*QUESTION 3;What kind of media institution would distributeyour media product and why?*PRESS BUTTON*I have already answered most of this question in the research and planning stage. So I will reciprocate what I have already said.I have chosen Bauer Media to be the institution that would produce my magazine because, there is a gap in there market for an indie / alternative magazine, my magazines target audience are greatly involved with the music they listen to so that they stand out, this is much like Kerrang! Bauer Media’s other specialist music magazine. My target audience is within there target audience range. It is similar to the other magazines making it accessible to adopt it’s house style but individual enough for it to have potential to sell singularly and bring in enough revenue to sustain the production of the magazine. What I have added to this is that Bauer media already have a tons of outlets across the country well iListen could be sold. Bauer Media would also supply funding for which I could produce convergence into a radio station or a music channel
*PRESS BUTTON*Question 4; who would be the audience for your product? This is again a question I have answered during the research and planning process. My target audience for my magazine are 14 – 21 year olds, predominantly male (as the indie groups are predominantly male), that are of the ABC1s on the social grading scale because they have the disposable income to be able to afford the magazine and afford the ‘indie’ lifestyle. They dislike the mainstream and strive to be different through clothing, behaviour and listening to indie and alternative music. They are at a ‘social war’ with chavs and dislike; rap, dance and popular music. This is shown throughout my magazine through my colour scheme as my audience are predominantly male, this is also shown in the interview when the first question asked is whether the lead singer is single and then I relate this back to the audience by saying that this is something they would be pleased to here. Issy is also sexualised on my front cover by being lead down at looking at the audience trying to draw in members but the male members of the band also give the audience someone to relate to. This is why I created the Kick the way they are.
*PRESS BUTTON*Question 5; how did I attract / address my audience?I feel I have answered this question briefly in my previous question as I talked about how my band and interview attracted the audienceI also attracted my audience through the use of popular bands that they would be interested in and want to read about such as MGMT, the price is cheap enough for 14-21 year olds to afford but not too cheap that they will think that the magazine is a joke. The ragged font also attracts my audience as this shows immediately that it is about rock yet the colour schemes throughout show that it is indie rock. I used the tagline ‘open your earphones’ this shows how personal the magazine is to them that it is referring to earphones and what they chose to listen to. ‘open your earphones’ is a play on the pun open your ears which means to listen and then refers this straight to the music magazine and to my audience. My use of direct address throughout the written work also attracts my audience as it’s asking for their opinions and their thoughts.*PRESS BUTTON*
*PRESS BUTTON*QUESTION 6;What have you learnt about technologies fromthe process of constructing this product?I have learnt also about the manipulating of images and how I can change the saturation and exposure through iPhoto.I have also learnt about how to construct a magazine using Gimp, by cutting and painting a background so that the image has a different colour scheme to be able to use different fonts to mean different things and attract different audiences and I have learnt how I can upload my work to a blog so it is easier for anybody to view it*PRESS BUTTON*
*PRESS BUTTON*QUESTION 7;Looking back at your preliminary task, what doyou feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?I feel the importance of audience feedback has really helped me to create my final product as apposed to by preliminary task I feel that my music magazine could sell where as I’m not sure that my school magazine would. This is because my target audience is defientlydifined throughout my music magazine and will appeal to all of there interests. I have learnt that taking several photos before choosing my final images has proven best as I can choose which images suit the magazine whereas looking back at my preliminary task I don’t feel this does that.*PRESS BUTTON*
