Evaluation q1
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
2.
3. In the majority of the music video we have stuck to the codes and
conventions of typical music videos and more specifically Weezer
music videos. For example we have incorporated the band preforming
within the music video which is typical of any music video of a band. So
in this way we have stuck quite firmly with the codes and conventions
of a music video from what we had found out from all the audience
research that we had done, and mainly from the surveys we did.
4. The mise-en-scene also follow the codes and conventions of typical music videos. The
composition of the band shots were typical in the way bands are set up in other music
videos. For instance in almost all music videos the lead singer at the for front and
guitarists at the sides and drummer at the back. This is the basic format for setting us a
band and we have whole heartedly stuck to this to make the video look like a real media
product. Also the clothing that the band members are wearing are also very similar to the
ones that Weezer wear in majority of their videos. The whole look is casual and
relaxed, but more precisely they are wearing sweaters and this also gives a direct link to
the actual song itself as Weezer do in lots of their videos, so that they link together well
and quite subtly as it is not the main focus of the video.
5. Also during the editing we had a split screen where we had
a difference in speed (fast on one side and slow on the
other) this is something that we stuck to the conventions
with as it is a use of intertextuality in our video. This is a
key theme in Weezer music videos and in ours it is
referencing and taking inspiration from.
6. During the editing we also stuck to conventions of Weezer music
videos. For example we used a split screen in the video which has the
same idea as another Weezer song ‘The Good Life’ where they have a
split screen also. This shows our video as sticking to the codes and
conventions as it is something that is used elsewhere and so we know
it is something the audiences enjoy and identify with a real Weezer
music video.
7. The location that the band preformed in is also stereotypical of music
and the original Weezer undone video. It is set in a typical studio with
all of the equipment and not necessarily at an industry standard to give
it a more unique and home made feel to it slightly. This shows that we
have stuck to the codes and conventions of general music videos and
in particular Weezer music videos.
8. We stuck to convention with the way we told the story and used the
lyrics as something that is light hearted rather than serious. This is
because we haven’t taken the metaphor for the string being a
relationship falling apart in the lyrics, and instead we have subtly gone
into it but we have been a bit more obvious on purpose by taking
someone's sweater being destroyed in the lyrics more literally. This is in
line with the conventions of Weezer music video as they have a light
hearted approach to their videos.
9.
10. For the album advert we have also stuck to the codes and conventions.
First of all we have like majority of all album adverts taken the cover of
the album as the main focus of the advert. This is something that is
normal for adverts and helps people recognise the advert is advertising
the digi-pack and that it becomes easier to identify when they would
see the digi-pack away from the advert.
11. We also included on our advert a review of the album and
also logos of all the different companies involved in typical
Weezer albums. So again we have developed the codes
and conventions for a album advert by adding these and
adhering to the conventions just like others.
12.
13. Our digi-pack also follows many codes and conventions. The layout of
the digi-pack is conventional as it follows the usual way that digi-packs
are made. We put three CD’s in digi-pack with the two extra ones on
the outside and had a straight forward fold that folds out in a tri-fold
which we have seen in many other media products. Also we have put
all of the song listings for the main CD on the back cover. This is also
something that all artists do on their digi-pack/albums so we are again
sticking with the codes and conventions.
14. The CD’s that we produced also develop codes and conventions as it is similar
to many other types of CD’s that have been produced and the way that it links
in with the whole digi-pack as a whole in the way that it has the same texture to
the CD but just in different complementary colours. This is what we have done
with our CD’s so that it fit in with conventions. Also so with the main CD we
have used TV image from the album cover. This also fits with conventions as
we have taken the main image from the cover and modified it to show the
Weezer logo instead of the band to link with the rest of the album and to give a
different colour and texture to the whole digi-pack and to break up all of the
blue. This is something that happens a lot for digi-packs as there can be a lot of
free space and breaking it up with the
different types and so we have again
Developed codes and conventions again.
15. There is one way we may have challenged the conventions of digi-
packs by the way we have put the two extra disks in place and how
they slot in horizontally. This is unusual for a digi-pack as they are
normally just put in full covered pockets or on a plastic holder. This
gives the did-pack something different to others and makes it unique in
that way. Other ways we have stuck to the conventions is the way we
have put on all of the record labels and barcodes that give the digi-pack
an authentic look that could be on sale.
