This document provides guidance for a classroom experience using assistive technology (AT). Students will select a student, identify their goal, and trial an AT solution. They will present the process and results. Key details include:
- Students will select a student, the goal, potential AT alternatives, and the best choice to achieve the goal.
- Important dates are provided for outlining alternatives, identifying the best choice, taking action using the AT, and presenting results.
- Examples of possible AT solutions are given for various goals like writing, math, routines, language, and reading.

2. ClassRoom Experience with Assistive Technology
in Education (CREATE) TP 11.1
• Your presentation should clearly describe your
thought process in selecting and making use
of a piece of assistive technology (AT) with a
student,
– the observed challenges and benefits of using this
AT with the student to achieve a specific academic
or social goal
– 10-15 slides, approx 10 minutes
– You can work in pairs
3. 1. identify the “student” who will participate in the
AT intervention.
– The student could be from your practicum placement
(with permission of 495G classroom teacher)
– a family member,
– friend
– You (least preferred)
2. Be sure this is someone who will have time to
participate in this activity, and that you will have
permission to both try a piece of AT and
document the impact of the AT for this person.

• Outline Alternatives: Sept 16 – November 4
– I will present examples in class
– Class discussion of ideas is welcome at this time
• Identify Best choice (proposal for your CREATE project)
: November 4 – 18
– Working in small groups, each student (or pair of students)
will meet with the instructor to discuss their proposal
– The proposal should address steps 1-3 in DO IT!, and can
be written in bullet format.
