Is it ok to…
…use the ideas of another author without

them in your own words?
Even if you do not directly copy the author's words you must
provide a reference when you talk about their ideas.

Is it ok to…
…submit all or part of one essay for two
separate assignments?
Although this may surprise you, self-plagiarism is a form of
plagiarism and is not permitted.

Is it ok to…

Is it ok to…
…include a fact or saying in your
assignment which is generally known
without providing a reference?
If a fact is generally well known or 'common knowledge' then you
don't need to reference it. Bear in mind that what you consider to
be common knowledge may not be well known to others, if in
doubt provide a reference

Is it ok to…
…incorporate text from another source,
changing one or two words and providing a
citation?

Is it ok to…
…incorporate text from another source,
changing one or two words and providing a
citation?
If you do not intend to quote directly from the source, you
must write about it in your own words. Using too many
words from the original source is plagiarism, even if you
provide a reference.

What is the big deal?
Plagiarism is an act of theft.
Plagiarism is dishonest.
Plagiarism is a form of
cheating.
CSU Student Code of Conduct
Plagiarism and Misrepresentation of Work
No student will represent the work of others as his or
her own. Themes, essays, term papers, tests,
presentations and other similar assignments must be
the work of the student submitting them. When direct
quotations are used, they must be indicated and when
the ideas of another are incorporated, they must be
appropriately cited.
1. No student will submit the same assignment for two
courses without the prior consent of the instructorFrom CSU Student Code of Conduct 2012-13; “Conduct Regulations I-E” p.2
Why do people plagiarize?
 Don’t know what plagiarism is
 Lack of confidence in one’s own
abilities
 Pressure to succeed
 Poor time-management
How can we avoid plagiarism
 Take good notes
 Quote, paraphrase, summarize
 Cite!
Cite your sources!
 Why?
 Citations refer readers to your original source(s)
 Provide evidence for your conclusions
 Prove you aren’t plagiarizing!
 When?
 Cite any ideas not your own
 When in doubt, CITE!
 How?
 Use citation managers to organize your sources
 Follow formats in appropriate style guides
To cite or not to cite?

According to Nagel, online citation managers
are often flawed, and it’s important to refer
to your style manual for citation help.

You must always cite the ideas of others. Make sure to include enough information to
identify the original source. You are also encouraged to include the author’s
credentials. For example, “Erin Nagel, CSU Librarian, stated in her 2013 presentation
titled COMM 1110, that online citation managers…..”

You must always cite direct quotations. In a speech, indicate when a
direct quote begins by inserting a phrase such as, “and I quote....”.
Oral citations
 Not enough to simply include sources
in a bibliography or works cited page
 Failure to provide an oral citation is
equal to failing to provide an in-text
citation in a written work
 Include enough information to allow
audience members to locate the
source
Tips for citing sources in speeches
 Books- Include title and author:
 According to Charles Brown, author of Speech and Man, …
 Journal- Include journal title, author, and date:
 In his 1968 study published in the Journal of Business
Communication, Mark Knapp found that….
 Website- website name, organization, access date
 The Centers for Disease control website at cdc.gov,
accessed on November 6th, 2013, provides….
 Newspaper- author, date, publication, version
 On the front page of the November 6th, 2013, Birmingham
News, Michael Smith described…..
More tips
 To keep from sounding repetitive and boring, mix
up your lead-in phrases. Some examples are:
 According to…
 This is also supported by…
 Another example is found in…
 John Doe, expert in… states that…
 Add credentials or other information to justify your
use of the source
 Mary Smith, leading biochemist at…
 According to ZDNet.com, one of the longest running
technology blogs….

Record info for ALL sources
Citation information for websites
