Dillard’s First ‘Night at the Opera” Set for April 13, 2010
NEW ORLEANS – Four of the South’s recognized opera singers will perform at Dillard University’s
first opera concert, free and open to the public, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, in Lawless Memorial
Chapel.
“A Night at the Opera” will feature:
Baritone Terrance Brown, instructor of voice at Dillard. His appearance last fall at the Opera
Louisiana gala was aired nationally on the Public Broadcasting System.
Soprano Susan Ruggerio, district winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council
auditions in 2007 and 2009.
Soprano Tiffany Bostic, regional finalist in the Metropolitan National Council auditions for
three years.
Tenor Chauncey Parker, who has performed in European and America opera houses and an
in-demand artist for the role of Sportin’ Life in “Porgy and Bess.”
Brown, who is coordinating the event, said the music department also will hold a Master Class with
the four performers for area high school students and DU music majors at 11 a.m. the day of the
concert.
“We’ve planned this event to offer the community an opportunity to enjoy music that they don’t
always hear and to introduce a beautiful genre to high school music students, Brown said.
The performers will sing 12 songs in three acts and categories: “The Land of Divas and Arias,”
“Catfish Row” and “A Taste of the Bohemian Life” Included will be songs from Charles-François
Gounod’s “Faust”; Jules Massenet’s “Werther”; Guiseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto”; George Gershwin’s
“Porgy and Bess”; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”; Mozart’s “Cosi fan tutte”; and
Giacomo Puccini’s “La Boheme.”
