I Have a Dream. . .
For this week's writing, you are to think about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how
he wanted the world to change for the future generations. Dr. King gave a speech that
was called “I Have a Dream,” and it spread a message of peace and a world where
everyone had the same rights and opportunities.
Think about what your dreams for the future are. If you were to give a speech, what would
your dream for the nation be? How would you hope people would treat one another so
that life was peaceful and fair? What could you do to help make things better in your
own neighborhood or school?
Try hard to have your sentences begin with capital letters and end with the correct
punctuation marks. Have a parent edit your work after you answer the questions, then type
on the computer, or rewrite the paragraph in your neatest handwriting.
REMEMBER:
1. Sentences should start with a capital and end with a period, question mark, or
exclamation point.
2. A sentence should be a complete thought or idea. Your paragraph should have at
least 5 sentences.
3. Strong sentences have vivid details.
4. Your paragraph should stay on topic and have a topic sentence, detail sentences,
and a concluding sentence. Don’t forget to indent!
5. All words should be spelled correctly. Have an adult proofread your paragraph
before turning it in.
Here’s an example of my paragraph:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man who had a dream for a better future. My dream for
the nation would be that no one would go hungry. Many adults and children across the United States don’t
have food for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It’s important for people to have food so that they can have
energy to go to school and work. I hope that more people would think about how they can help feed the
hungry in their communities. I can help by donating food to a food bank or holding a food drive in the
community. I hope other people in the community will donate to food banks or volunteer to help those in
need too. Together we can put a stop to hunger!
2. What would your dream for the nation be? What would you want to change or make
better?
