2. Purpose of the session
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation mandates that
their grantees release content they build with
grant money under open licenses.
• Discuss what it takes to develop an open
course package, such as
1. how to ensure the content is open,
2. how to assure the quality of the materials, and
3. how to manage deliverables
3. How to ensure the content is OPEN (1)
• All original content should use an open
license, Creative Commons CC BY.
• If copyrighted materials are included in the
content, proper citation and permission from
the original author should be obtained.
4. How to ensure the content is OPEN (2)
• It is recommended to include a Citation and
Copyright folder in each course package:
– Citation and Copyright folder
• Copyright Permissions
• Copyright statement
• References
• Materials Audit
• Video List
5. How to ensure the content is OPEN (3)
Project managers should consider:
• Ensuring that all course developers are aware of
the requirement of open licensing.
• Becoming familiar with the concept of OER.
Information is available at http://open4us.org/.
• Encouraging the course developers to develop
the original resources or use open sources only.
• Having a copyright expert (e.g., college librarian)
who is knowledgeable with open licensing review
the content.

Project managers should consider:
• Having a professional instructional designer
review the design of the material.
• Providing templates for each instructional
design process with examples.
• Having at least 2 outside reviews on the
adequacy of course content.
9. How to manage DELIVERABLES (1)
Project managers should consider:
• Providing a deliverables list with
– Clear expectations
– Specific due dates
• Sharing deliverables tracking document with
all team members and using it to determine
the status of work.
• Constantly reminding the team members of
the due dates and the consequences.
10. Come to a Breakout session

• Hands-on experience on how/where to find
OER
• Demonstration on how to check if the
resource is openly licensed
• Q&A session for the detailed information on
how we managed the OER project, such as the
project timeline, budget, communication, and
distribution
