Use one light to create interesting portraits in the lighting studio.

• Rembrandt lighting – triangular light on cheekbones • Traditional use – soft light umbrella
o 45 degree angle from center o Using umbrella at 45 degree angle above objects
o 45 degrees above subject • Shoot through – through umbrella
• Butterfly lighting - butterfly shape on nose o Use umbrella to shoot through onto objects (see
o light in FRONT of subject teacher for help)
o light higher and more above in direction o Keep 45 degree angle above objects
shooting down onto subject • Hard lighting –
• Edge lighting – dramatic lighting for eyes o use the NON UMBRELLA LIGHTS
o Light same height as subject’s face o do not use any umbrella as diffusion
o 90 degree angle to the side o still shoot at 45 degree angle above objects
Step 2: Using Your Manual Settings
• Shoot first 6 shots of a PERSON (see definitions above after viewing videos)
1. Rembrandt lighting
2. Rembrandt lighting with white reflector as fill
3. Rembrandt lighting with silver or gold reflector as fill
4. Butterfly lighting
5. Butterfly lighting with white reflector as fill
6. Butterfly lighting with silver or gold reflector as fill
7. Edge lighting
8. Edge lighting with white reflector as fill
9. Edge lighting with silver or gold reflector as fill
• Shoot last 4 shots of SELECTED OBJECTS on moveable table (see me)

Step 3: Grading – put in order and batch rename to conference for a grade
