2. From Leeds to Staszow
The United
Kingdom,
England,
Scotland, Wales
and Northern
Ireland is
separated from
the rest of Europe
by seas.
Our teachers
needed to fly from
Leeds to get to
your school in
Poland. This is
the route they
took.
3. The capital of England
London is an exciting city just waiting
to be explored. It is home to seven and
a half million (7,500,000) people.
London is characteristically British.
From the
boxy black cabs
to the double-decker
buses
and red telephone booths
London is stamped with grand symbols
of Britain.
4. The capital city of England is
London.
Leeds to London
273.09 km.
This distance is equal to
169.69 miles
5. A city full of history with many different styles of architecture
The Palace of Westminster, a Victorian
Neo-gothic structure, home to Big Ben
The Tower of London, a
medieval castle that began
construction in 1078
Saint Paul’s Cathedral
6. Queen Victoria, the
first monarch to
reside at
Buckingham
Palace, moved into
the newly
completed palace
upon her accession
in 1837.
And, of course, Buckingham Palace, home to the royal family.
7. The old, brought together with the new.
City Hall - a boulder
shaped building built in
2002
The London Eye, 135 meter
tall Ferris Wheel offering 360
degree views of the city
A

primary
financial
district
The Post
Office
Tower
16. Some local
beauty spots:
Mann Dam
Sadly, some parts
have rubbish thrown
in it but local groups
help to keep it clean.
People go fishing
here. It is a lovely
calm
place in the
middle of our busy
town.
17. The Greenway
The Greenway is a
disused railway line.
Where the lines once
were there is now a
pathway. Families walk,
cycle, roller skate,
skateboard and horse
ride.
The railway sleepers
have been recycled
and turned into
sculptures, like these
sheep, the hoops and
this seat.
18. West End Park
West End Park is next to our school. We use it for outdoor games lessons
in the summer and we hold family events there.
Our Green Team work with a group of neighbours, called ‘The Friends of
West End Park’ to keep it looking beautiful. They have built some raised
flower beds for us to use. You can see the purple crocuses we planted for
the spring, on the Eco-Pals website.
The seeds that were brought back from our meeting in Italy have also
been planted there so that we can share them with our local community.
Thank you.
19. Buildings
In the 1800’s and
early 1900’s, this
building was a
church. It has now
been ‘recycled’ and
is an Indian
restaurant – the
largest in the world!
It still has many of
the original church
features inside.
This pub closed
down and has been
‘recycled’ into a
health and well
being centre.
This woolen mill
closed down and
became derelict
and badly
vandalised. It is
now being
‘recycled’ into
modern houses and
apartments.
20. Community Celebrations
In Cleckheaton we have many community celebrations. The Chamber of Trade,
which includes the shop keepers, local businesses and schools organise lots of
things for us to do.
Such as …
Easter Egg hunts
Bonfire night, with spectacular fireworks
Turning on of the Christmas lights
A Folk Festival
Halloween witch hunts.
24. ON NOVEMBER 5 PEOPLE ACROSS THE UK CELEBRATE
BONFIRE NIGHT.
THERE ARE SMALL FIREWORKS PARTIES IN BACK
GARDENS ALONG WITH BIG ORGANISED DISPLAYS IN
PUBLIC PARKS.
THE REASON WE DO IT IS BECAUSE
IT'S THE ANNIVERSARY OF AN
ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP THE
HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT LED BY A
MAN CALLED GUY FAWKES.
IT'S CALLED THE GUNPOWDER
PLOT, AND BONFIRES ARE LIT TO
BURN THE "GUY" - A KIND OF
DUMMY THAT REPRESENTS
FAWKES.
25. GUY (GUIDO) FAWKES LED THE GUNPOWDER PLOT IN 1605.
IT WAS A PLAN TO BLOW UP KING JAMES I AND HIS
GOVERNMENT.
FAWKES AND HIS GROUP PUT 36 BARRELS OF GUNPOWDER
IN CELLARS UNDER THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT IN
LONDON, READY TO SET OFF A MASSIVE EXPLOSION.
ONE MEMBER OF THE GROUP SENT A LETTER TO HIS
FRIEND WHO WORKED IN PARLIAMENT, WARNING HIM
TO STAY AWAY ON NOVEMBER 5.
THE KING'S SUPPORTERS GOT HOLD OF THE LETTER AND
THE PLOT WAS RUMBLED!
GUARDS BROKE INTO THE CELLARS WHERE THE
GUNPOWDER PLOTTERS WERE WAITING. THEY WERE
ARRESTED, TORTURED AND EXECUTED.
THE GUNPOWDER PLOT WAS ABOUT RELIGION. ENGLAND
WAS A PROTESTANT COUNTRY, AND THE PLOTTERS WERE
CATHOLIC.
THE GROUP WANTED TO RETURN ENGLAND TO THE
CATHOLIC FAITH. THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD DO THIS BY
KILLING KING JAMES I AND HIS MINISTERS.
