1. Questionnaire Results
In my questionnaire I asked a mix of quantitative (Questions with set
answers), and qualitative (Questions with a person thought up answer)
questions. Quantitative questions are helpful because they give you a
set result that can be tallied easily and you can easily see how
many people chose a certain answer, enabling you to take a percentage
from the survey.
Qualitative questions are useful because it gives a personal opinion
from the person you are questioning and are more specific than
qualitative questions.
I asked ten males and ten females eight questions. Both males and
females were between 15 and 21, meaning they came inside my
magazines target audience, which helps me be specific with what
magazines features I should include. I didn't just ask males or females
because my magazine should appeal to both genders.
2. Quantitative Results

From this I can see that in both cases
VIBE and Kerrang were very popular,
and that magazines with less popular
types of sub-genres were less
popular with the people inside my
target audience. Also this shows that
there is not much difference in
opinions between males and females.
This shows that my target audience
find rock and pop best genres and
that I should pitch my magazine in
either of those areas.
3. Quantitative Results
Male:2) How much money are you

From this I can learn that ,in particular,
males care more about the price than
females do overall. Although the
majority of people said they wouldn’t
mind paying £2 or more and quite a
few said they would pay even more
than that. From this I can gain the initial
idea that my magazine should be
pitched in the market around £2 to be
competitive. Especially as my target
audience consists of teens who may
not have occupations and therefore not
much disposable income.
4. Quantitative Results

These results elicit that males,
on the majority, prefer a
magazine to be released
fortnightly and females, on the
majority, prefer a magazines
every week. The conclusions
that can be drawn from this is
that it is much more popular with
the target audience to publish
the magazine weekly or
fortnightly so I will take this into
account when proposing my
magazine.
5. Qualitative Results
This question was mainly about what motivates the target audience to read
the magazine and what they usually expect to find in a music magazine.
There was a range of answers for this question, most people said it was to
find out information about their favourite bands/ artists, and for new concert
and festival information.
Some said it was a time filler and that they often read a magazine if they
had spare time or were bored. Also people said it was mainly for images,
such as free posters to put on their walls and if the front cover had
interested them. Another thing that was frequently mentioned was the
inclusion of new things such as new artists, bands, songs, and albums. This
tells me that the audience are keen on keeping up to date with today's
music and learning about it.
From what I observed it seemed to be that it could be because to do with the
age group, music is often a topic of conversation and you can then know in
advance when a concert or album is so you can save up the money,
because students may not be able to afford concerts etc. This gives me
ideas of what to include such as exclusives on bands and releases of
things, and show that the magazine is full of exclusives.
6. Qualitative Results
Which genre of music/ music magazine do you prefer and
why?
Answers Included:
-Rock
-Pop
-Indie
-Rap
-Heavy Metal
This shows me a variance of preferred genres, but a majority under the genre I
am intending to do, Pop. Rock was also popular but that is a genre I am
personally not too knowledgeable about.
7. Qualitative Results
Which are your favourite artists to listen to and read about?
Answers included:
-Two door cinema club
-Imagine Dragons
-Chase and Status
-Fenech-Soler
-Katy Perry
-50 cent
These are the kinds of bands/ artists with similar genres to my magazine that
were answered by the participants. This is a good sign for the sub-genre I have
pitched for my magazine.
8. Qualitative Results
What is your favourite thing about music magazines?
This question was used to focus on what their favourite things in
traditional, conventional magazines are. Answers included things such
as:
-Interviews with bands and artists.
-Reviews of albums that have recently been out.
-A popular choice was posters, as they are free and easy rather than buying them
at events.
-Exclusives
These choices show what the target audience look for in a music magazine and
gives an indication of what I should include in my magazine. These are all things I
could advertise to have in the magazine on the cover.
9. How this changes my magazine.
These answers have given me ideas for my magazine such as
pricing it around £2-£3 and releasing it fortnightly. I also have
support and reason to publish a pop magazine and things like
posters and interviews I should include in it. I have also found out
what motivates the target audience to buy a magazine and know
that if its something they read in spare time that it should be informal
and entertaining, so it’ll be something they would do in spare time
again. I think this questionnaire has therefore been successful.
