3. Ancient Indian Pottery
• LEFT- Such figurines may represent sacrificial animals
used in specific annual rituals. (bulls were very common
and used in daily life and sacrifice in India)
• TOP RIGHT- Burial pottery- some handmade, some from
the wheel. People buried with these because they put
burial offerings in them to the gods.
• BOTTOM RIGHT- disposable drinking cups-The pointed
base results from rapid manufacture off a fast wheel and
makes it easy for stacking in the kiln. The grooves around
the body may serve as a simple decoration, but they also
allow for a better grip.

• What specific characteristics of culture?
–Shape, color, subject- pottery, figurines…?
• Why those?
–For rituals, religious reasons, eating…etc
6. Think about:
• Creating a variety of pieces?
• How would I make my piece?
• Designs or drawings?
• What color glaze or does it
even need glaze?
Editor's Notes
What objects do you see?
Does this tell you anything about their culture?
If you were to create any of these pieces how would you based on what you’ve learned how to do?
*Explain each piece from the Harappan Culture in India and its significance
Distinctive characteristics of pottery from that country, or a specific culture from that country
Why those characteristics?- is it based on rituals, religious beliefs, b/c they’re in a specific region, animals native to their area, etc.
