nutrition spectrum globally: from famine to obesity.
• The world average daily calorie intake per person is
2,800 per day as of 2009.
14. Famine
• Famine is extreme under nourisment, caused
by a short term worsening of an already food
insecure situation. Famine differs from long
term under nourishment in that the risk of
death significantly increases.
• Causes of famines are hard to define as often
complex and overlapping. Although often
triggered by external ‘shocks’ e.g. Natural
hazard, war, migration, etc.

• Excess calorie intake leads to obesity and
related diseases such as diabetes.
