Unit 4 – Help from the examiners
• STEER:
• Explore the complex causes of food supply inequalities, both
‘natural’ and those generated by people and their lifestyles.
• Research contrasting locations and scales showing different
causes of inequalities in food supply.
• EXAM QUESTION:
Life on the margins – the food Supply

Nutrition Spectrum
• Varying degrees of food consumed per head each
day – measured in calorie intake per head. There is a
nutrition spectrum globally: from famine to obesity.
• The world average daily calorie intake per person is
2,800 per day as of 2009.

Famine
• Famine is extreme under nourisment, caused
by a short term worsening of an already food
insecure situation. Famine differs from long
term under nourishment in that the risk of
death significantly increases.
• Causes of famines are hard to define as often
complex and overlapping. Although often
triggered by external ‘shocks’ e.g. Natural
hazard, war, migration, etc.
LO: The complex causes of food supply inequalities
Food Surplus – Obesity
• Excess calorie intake leads to obesity and
related diseases such as diabetes.
• Problem of high supply of cheap high –fat
foods.
• Western (urban) life style (high stress, low
exercise.

1. Physical
2. Social
3. Agricultural
4. Economic / Political
