The U symbol stands for Universal. A U rated
film must be visually suitable for audiences of
four years and over. The film must not contain
any sorts of bad violence as it may harm the
viewers who are viewing the movie. On the
other hand the film can have brief fight scenes
which characters are put in danger, but this
can not be extreme. Also, very mild language
can be used. Examples of very mild language
are hell and damn. Bad language can not be
used in U rated films as it mat affect the
viewers.
PG

When you see a PG rating symbol on a film poster
or on a film cover. This symbol means that the film
should not affect a child aged eight or older.
However, their parents are forced to consider if
the film is suitable for younger or kids who are
sensitive. The film may have the use of some
verbal abuse but this has to be mild language.
There must be no violence as this may affect the
A 12 A is the the age for a film that is
suited for 12 year olds. It also means that
a child under 12 is allowed to watch it if
accompanied with an adult. 12 A is only
used for films and is not used for DVDs.
When a film has a 12 on it it means that it is not
suitable for children under 12. This is because the
film may contain unsuitable scenes for someone
under 12 and it may have themes in it that parents
do not want their children to see. The difference
between a 12 and a 12a is that an adult can
accompany someone under 12 to a 12a but not to
a 12. Also a 12 certificate is found on a DVD when
a 12a isn’t.
15 and 18
•

A 15 rated film is a film classification
where only a person ages 15 or over is
allowed to view. 15 rated films contain
several extreme themes such as violence
and drug use.

•

An 18 rated film has a lot stronger themes
compared to 15. 18 rated films have
extreme violence, several uses of drugs
and sexual themes because of these
themes only people aged 18 and over are
allowed to view them.
