Reprise Records was formed in 1960 by Frank Sinatra to provide more artistic freedom for his recordings. It has since produced records for notable artists like Fleetwood Mac, Faith No More, and Jimi Hendrix. Their most recent project is Green Day's 2016 album Revolution Radio. Blackened Recordings was founded in 2012 by Metallica as an independent label to release their future albums. Their first album under the new label is Hardwired...To Self Destruct, set for release in November 2016. Sony Music Entertainment was formed in 1929 and has worked with iconic artists such as AC/DC, Aerosmith, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix. Warner Music Group is one of the "big three"
The document summarizes the four major record labels in the UK: Sony Music Entertainment UK, EMI Group, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group. It provides examples of popular artists signed to each label and briefly outlines each label's history, size, and operations.
There are two main types of record labels: major labels and independent labels. Major labels, such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group, own the majority of music worldwide and have greater financial resources, distribution networks, and marketing power. Independent labels, like Rough Trade Records, have more creative freedom but less financial backing and struggle more to get music heard. Both types of labels aim to develop and promote artists, but major labels can offer larger advances and production support.
1) 4AD is a British independent record label founded in 1980 that focuses on alternative rock, dream pop, post-punk, electronica, and indie rock. They signed underground American artists in 1992 and have had distribution deals with major labels.
2) Columbia Records is one of the major record labels owned by Sony Music Entertainment. Founded in 1887, they sign a wide variety of artists across genres including pop, rock, R&B, and indie folk like Foster the People.
3) Domino Recording Company is a UK-based independent label founded in London that has offices in Brooklyn and Germany. They focus on creativity over style and have had success with artists like Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand
Major record labels like Sony have higher budgets and funding which allows them to sign many well-known artists. Independent labels like XL ordinarily have lower budgets and focus on a smaller number of artists, often in genres like indie. Sony is a large global company that started in 1946 in Japan and has grown through acquisitions, now specializing in electronics, music, and more. XL started in 1989 in London focusing on DIY hardcore rave music influenced by American, Jamaican, and European sounds about home recording and illegal parties rather than Sony's multinational pop and R&B.
Syco Music has offices in London and Los Angeles and exclusively signs winners and finalists from shows like The X Factor. It has enjoyed success in the UK market with 22 number-one singles and 13 number-one albums between 2004-2009. The document discusses researching Syco Music as a label for a potential girl band because of its experience in the pop industry with multiple number one hits and management of groups like Little Mix and Fifth Harmony. Virgin Records was founded in 1972 and had success with artists like Roy Orbison, Devo, and Spice Girls. Polydor Records operates as part of Universal Music Group and has represented artists like Cheryl Cole, Girls Aloud, Ellie Goulding, and Lana Del
Domino is an independent record label founded in 1993 that focuses on indie rock music. Some notable artists signed to Domino include Pavement, Franz Ferdinand, and The xx. The document discusses two other major record labels, Island Records and Columbia Records, which focus on wider genres and mass audiences. It concludes that Domino would be the preferred label due to its indie rock focus and targeting of niche audiences interested in that genre.
Major record labels like Sony have higher budgets and funding which allows them to sign many well-known artists. Independent labels like XL Recordings typically have lower budgets and focus on a smaller number of artists, often in genres like indie music. XL helped shape a genre in the late 1980s influenced by American, Jamaican, and European sounds and focused on underground music scenes rather than the multinational business of Sony. Over time, XL has led to success stories by working with fresh, undiscovered talent in recent years.

The document discusses three record labels: Syco Music, Virgin EMI Records, and Fueled By Ramen. Syco Music, owned by Simon Cowell, has found success with artists from shows like The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent. Virgin EMI Records is a large label focused mainly on pop artists. Fueled By Ramen specializes in punk-inspired rock/pop bands and could provide experience promoting an indie rock group, but has many existing artists signed.
Sony Music is the oldest record label, founded in 1887. It has a vast catalog of important recordings and houses many top artists both past and present. Warner Music Group is one of the "big three" record companies and operates major labels like Warner Bros., Parlophone, and Atlantic. It was formerly owned by Time Warner but is now privately held. Universal Music Group is the largest music corporation in the world, owning Universal Music Publishing and claiming a 98% share of the global music market through subsidiaries. It is home to many top artists and co-owns the popular music website Vevo with Sony.
The four largest record labels that control about 70% of the global music market are Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, EMI Group, and Warner Music Group. These "Big Four" labels sign and promote recording artists, market and distribute their music, and accounted for 71.7% of total music sales in 2005. Universal Music Group was the largest with a 25.5% market share, followed by Sony BMG with 21.5%, EMI Group with 13.4%, and Warner Music Group with 11.3%. Independent labels combined made up the remaining 28.3% of the market.
YouTube is a video-sharing website launched in 2005 that allows users to upload, view and share videos including music videos. Vevo is a similar video-sharing website owned by major music companies that offers music videos. MTV was originally a television channel focused on music videos but now focuses more on reality television targeted at teenagers.
Island Records was founded in 1959 in Jamaica and helped influence the progressive music scene in the UK in the early 1970s. It struggled financially in the late 1970s and early 1980s due to Bob Marley's death and high royalties owed to U2. It was sold to PolyGram UK Group in 1989 and then to Seagram's in 1998. Artists signed to Island Records that are similar to our genre include Jessie Ware, Aluna George, Disclosure, and Avicii.
Columbia Records is owned by Sony Music Entertainment and was the first record company to produce pre-recorded records in 1888. It has signed artists like Katy B, Calvin Harris, and Little Nikki that produce music
Warner Music Group is an independent music record company founded in 1958 that owns many renowned recording studios worldwide and is the third largest record company with a net income of $56 billion in 2008. It records artists such as Aerosmith, Dire Straits, The Kinks, and R.E.M. Sony is the second largest of the big four music companies, founded in 1929 with $5.6 billion in revenue in 2008, consisting of labels like Columbia Records and recording artists like Bob Dylan, Kings of Leon, and Pearl Jam.
This document discusses independent music labels, two British indie labels (Domino Records and XL Recordings), and the "Big Three" major music labels (Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group). Independent labels are not owned by the major labels and can vary in size from large profitable companies to small personal projects. While some large independent labels are now distributed by the majors, they generally have more financial independence. The document also notes that if releasing their own music, the author would prefer an independent label like XL Recordings due to their ability to target niche audiences.
Sony Music was formed in 1887 when Columbia Records was established, growing to become a world-class record label and industry leader through acquisitions of other labels. The company has built a vast music catalog comprising historically important recordings across its labels including Columbia, RCA, and those under its Ministry of Sound Group, and has successfully launched careers of contemporary artists like Eric Prydz, Example, and Wretch 32 over the last decade.
Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and EMI are some of the major music labels discussed. They own many popular subsidiary labels and work with well-known artists. Independent labels like XL Recordings, Lab Records, Dualtone Records, and Rough Trade were also mentioned. These labels tend to release fewer albums annually but work with talented artists. Marketing campaigns help promote new music videos. Ellie Goulding released the video for "On My Mind" alongside her new album and tour dates. She used social media, websites, radio stations, and interviews to build excitement leading up to the release.
The four major record labels that dominate the music industry are Sony BMG, Warner Music Group, EMI, and Universal Music Group. Together they control about 75% of the global music market. Each label owns numerous subsidiary labels that sign and manage artists. The labels provide funding to produce, market and distribute music worldwide in exchange for profits from album and single sales. While online retailers now compete with traditional stores, the "big four" labels remain the dominant players in the global music industry.
The four main institutions that dominate today's music industry are Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI Music Publishing, collectively known as "The Big Four". These institutions control the global recorded music business and work with many successful artists. They discover, develop, and promote artists, as well as market and distribute their music through various formats and platforms. In addition, they own and manage the copyrights to musical compositions.
Major record labels control over 80% of the music industry, with Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music making up the big three labels and collectively owning 90% of the market. Universal Music Group controls 37% through its many subsidiary labels like Def Jam and Republic Records. Warner Music Group controls 19% via subsidiaries like Bad Boy Records. Sony Music controls 34% through subsidiaries like Columbia Records and Epic Records.
This document discusses major music labels and independent labels. It provides information on four major labels - Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, EMI, and Warner Music Group. It notes some of the top artists signed to each label. The document also profiles four independent labels - XL Recordings, Lab Records, Dualtone Records, and Rough Trade Records, and some of their signed artists. Finally, it analyzes the marketing campaign for Ellie Goulding's 2015 music video for "On My Mind," highlighting her use of social media, reviews on music websites, radio play, and interviews to promote the new release.
Major labels such as Sony Music Entertainment own the majority of the global music market. They have significant financial resources that allow them to widely distribute, market, and sign new talent. However, major labels have a long corporate approval process. Independent labels like Roughtrade lack the distribution abilities of major labels but have more flexibility in their operations. They can be more creative in finding and developing new artists as well as adopting new media technologies. Roughtrade was founded in 1976 and helped launch the careers of influential punk bands in the late 1970s. It is now part of the Beggars Group and continues to specialize in genres like punk, indie pop, and post-punk.
A record label is responsible for marketing, distributing, and profiting from an artist's music and videos. They provide funding for video production and promotion in exchange for a percentage of profits. Major labels like Sony Music Entertainment have large budgets to widely promote videos, while independent labels have smaller budgets and niche audiences. Sony Music Entertainment owns artists like Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake, using its budget to fund high production value videos that promote both the music and partner projects.
The document discusses the history and operations of the "Big 4" major record labels - Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and EMI. It details their acquisitions of smaller labels over time, key executives, legal disputes, and role in distributing music through new streaming services. The companies evolved from early music recording technology firms and now dominate the global music industry.
WMG is one of the major record labels and focuses on signing and developing musical acts across many genres, including rock and indie music. It uses various marketing techniques like websites, social media, and music videos on platforms like YouTube and Hulu to promote its artists. EMI is also one of the major record labels and has had commercial success with artists like Coldplay and Radiohead. Roc-A-Fella Records was founded in 1996 to release Jay-Z's debut album and has since worked with other successful hip hop artists. Sony Music Entertainment was formed from the rebranding of CBS Records in 1991 and owns labels like Columbia and Epic Records.
Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in 1959 as Tamla Records, changing the name to Motown in 1960. Motown focused on American pop music, signing iconic artists like Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and The Jackson 5. When founded as Tamla Records, its slogan was "The sound that makes the world go round," but as Motown its slogan became "The sound of young America." Motown also produced live shows featuring performances from its top artists that were recorded and broadcast on television.
The document analyzes several shots from Katy Perry's music video. It discusses how establishing shots set the jungle scene and relate to The Jungle Book, making audiences feel safe. Close-ups show Perry's face prominently while blurring the background to emphasize her importance, subverting gender stereotypes. Wide shots present both Perry and other figures to advance the narrative and tell a story through a sequence of images, though one wide shot makes Perry seem small. The video aims to illustrate the song's lyrics and solve tensions through honesty. Different shot types and techniques construct Perry's star identity and show how constructions can change.
Simon Firth identified three main typologies of music videos: narrative videos tell a story that relates to the song's lyrics, contradictory videos feature a performance that is unrelated to the lyrics, and performance videos focus on simply performing the song. As an example, Firth cites Outkast's "Roses" music video which features a boy band performing on a school stage, telling a story through their performance while the performance setting does not match the song's lyrics, demonstrating all three typologies.
Richard Dyer distinguishes between pop performers and pop stars. Pop performers like Lil Mama may have one hit song but lack lasting brand awareness, while pop stars like Rihanna continuously release chart-topping singles and are known worldwide. Dr. Dre is an example of a pop star who developed a long-lasting brand through his Beats headphones and speaker products. Pop stars are also constant presences, as the public always sees them primarily as their stage persona even if they take acting roles, unlike film stars who are seen as their specific characters. Finally, Dyer says pop stars are constructs that remain obedient to their careers and industries, even if their actions seem rebellious.
Simon Frith identified three broad typologies of music videos: performance, narrative, and conceptual. Performance videos depict the artist in a concert or studio setting to emphasize the music. Narrative videos attempt to tell a linear love story, often with the male artist performing impressive actions to win back a female interest. Conceptual videos rely on poetic metaphor through visual and verbal elements to convey inexpressible truths, creating a mood rather than telling a straight storyline.

Narrative videos attempt to tell a linear love story, often with the male artist performing impressive actions to win back a female interest. Conceptual videos rely on poetic metaphor through visual and verbal elements to convey inexpressible truths, creating a mood rather than telling a straight storyline.
Music videos commonly use conventions like editing to the beat of the music, performance scenes of the artist lip syncing to their song, using multiple camera shots from different angles to show situations and advance a storyline, and having a narrative told through characters that relates to the song's lyrics. Ne-Yo's "Miss Independent" video effectively employs these conventions through its use of quick flash cut editing between close camera shots that help establish the location and main characters over the course of the storyline.
This document discusses several conventions commonly found in music videos. It analyzes multiple shots from Beyoncé and Amerie music videos to identify these conventions. Some conventions discussed include starting with a wide shot of the artist to introduce them, using editing techniques like split screens and slow motion, frequent closeups of the artist so audiences can see their expressions, and full length shots of the artist's outfits when the song begins or at the chorus to match the music. The shots are also analyzed in the context of theories about appealing to audiences and establishing the artist's image.
Teyana Taylor performs an intense dance workout in a weight room in the music video for "Fade" by Kanye West. Close-ups and slow camera movements show how tired she is after her routine. She is later joined by her husband Iman. The video ends with a slow zoom out of Teyana in a powerful pose, leaning on Iman in a way that enhances both her power and his ability to "tame" her. Teyana dances for the majority of the video in the same scene to match the deeper meaning of the song through her movements.
Andrew Goodwin proposed several theories about how music videos relate to the songs they accompany: 1) "Sound and vision" - the visuals should match the lyrics; 2) "Genre" - the video should portray stereotypes of the song's genre; 3) "Star image" - the artist should be the focus with close-ups; 4) "Illustrative" - the visuals should represent the lyrics; 5) "Amplification" - key meanings are emphasized through repetition; 6) "Disjuncture" - in some cases, the visuals ignore the song's meaning; 7) "Notions of looking" - audiences watch the artist for pleasure; 8) "Intertextuality" - videos
This document summarizes a recreation of Drake's album cover for "Nothing Was the Same." It describes the image of a child against a sky background, representing Drake looking to the future in a sweet and innocent way. The cover also includes the artist and album name. According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the clear album information fulfills listeners' safety needs by making it obvious what they are purchasing.
The document discusses conventions used in album magazine advertisements. It analyzes the use of images, typography, color, names, facial expressions, buzz words, shot types, and web addresses in advertising Jessie J's album "Who You Are". Various theories are applied to explain how these conventions construct identities, meet audience needs, and influence purchasing decisions.
The male lead was unavailable for the shoot so alternative talent was sought. They ended up with Sean, an 18-year-old black model that fits the target age range of 16-20 for the video. Research found a third of the target audience is black, so having a black model may make that portion of the audience feel represented. Sean is also expected to be able to perform as envisioned for the video.
This document provides a summary and analysis of scenes from Katy Perry's "Roar" music video. It describes several shots including: 1) a mid-shot of Katy emerging from a plane wreckage looking shocked; 2) an over-the-shoulder shot of her making a weapon out of her shoe; and 3) a close-up of her showering and now looking calm. It analyzes how these shots connect to theories about emphasizing the star and matching the lyrics and video. The document also describes wide shots of Katy blending into the jungle but standing out, and sitting on a jungle throne looking happy and confident having conquered the crash site.
This document profiles two target markets for music merchandise - a 18-year-old male college student in London who enjoys music festivals and driving with friends, and a 20-year-old female university student in Portsmouth who enjoys driving and listening to music. The document analyzes Beyoncé's self-titled album cover. It discusses the simple black, grey, and white color scheme, and suggests using bolder colors. It notes the two font sizes draw attention to the artist and title differently. The main image places Beyoncé directly in the center to emphasize her importance as the artist. Beyoncé makes direct eye contact with the viewer, though appearing naked appeals more to the male gaze. While the font placement perfectly highlights Beyoncé's brand recognition, the overall cover is dull and will not stand out on store shelves. The point of the cover was to showcase Beyoncé's significance as the central artist.

It promotes the car's features like fuel efficiency and cargo space to appeal to environmentally-conscious customers seeking a vehicle for recreation or family use. In just a few words and images, the ad uses visual rhetoric to connect the car to an idealized lifestyle and target key consumer values around fun, practicality and responsibility.

The song is about a man leaving a relationship with a woman who thrives on drama. He says she always hopes for the worst and waits for him to make mistakes so she can argue with him. However, he will find a new girlfriend who understands his needs and won't create drama like his ex. In the end, his ex will regret constantly arguing when he is happy with someone new who appreciates him. He says goodbye to his ex as he moves on to something better and is no longer willing to try and make their dysfunctional relationship work.
Andrew Goodwin believes music videos should represent the genre's stereotypes through visual elements like clothing, jewelry, and settings. He cites "Pop That" by French Montana as an example where the video directly illustrates the song's lyrics. Simon Firth categorized music videos as performance, narrative, or conceptual based on their style. Performance videos showcase the artist live or in the studio. Narrative videos tell linear stories, often about love. Conceptual videos rely on metaphor and mood over direct narrative.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
