Frank Sinatra loved whiskey. Period. After all, the people who make Jack Daniels decided to posthumously name a line of liquor – the Sinatra Select, in his honor. If nothing else, this gesture is a show of appreciation to the 20th century musical legend; particularly since Sinatra singlehandedly popularized the then lesser known J.D. whiskey brand.

“Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love
your enemy.” – Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra loved whiskey. Period. After all, the people who
make Jack Daniels decided to
posthumously name a line of
liquor – the Sinatra Select, in
his honor. If nothing else, this
gesture is a show of
appreciation to the 20th
century musical legend;
particularly since Sinatra
singlehandedly popularized the
then lesser known J.D. whiskey
brand. It is also said that he
was buried with a bottle of the
stuff – one for the road,
maybe?
2. Based on accounts given by his old time pals and close family,
he referred to the Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey as
“Gasoline” or just “Daniels” and glamorized it as the “perfect
gentleman’s drink,” testaments to just how attached he was to
his whiskey.
The king of cool during the baby boomer period was not only
well known for his brew of choice but also how he had it. On
the rocks. His daughter, Nancy Sinatra reportedly described her
dad’s J.D. recipe to consist of 3 cubes of ice, water and of
course the good old ‘gasoline’ (usually 90 proof). It is said that
he even had his own way of holding the glass while he drank,
cupped in his hand while insulated with a cocktail napkin. No
doubt, Frank was classy as he was cool and trendy. But what
would he be doing differently today, if he was still around,
knocking back J.D. with his famed Rat Pack?
Based on history, it doesn’t seem like the man changed much,
having been hooked on the same brand of whiskey for more
than 50 years. However, just in case, it is not hard to imagine
him swilling his favorite drink over rocks – literally. Whiskey
rocks to be precise.
3. Whiskey rocks, also called whiskey stones or sipping stones
have been slowly growing in popularity in recent years,
becoming a hit with whiskey purists and persons who prefer
their drink chilled without being watered down by melting ice.
It is a fact that the august singer always had water added to his
drink, maybe to achieve a certain flavor or take the edge off,
but the added ice may have just been for the aesthetics more
than anything else.
The cubed rocks, made from natural Soapstone, may not yet be
a hit with bars, one of Frank Sinatra’s hangout spots but the
man nicknamed Ol’ Blue Eyes, also loved to entertain friends,
many of
whom
were also
drinkers.
The trendy
person that
he was, if
he was still around, he could quite possibly have indulged in
some whiskey stones. If not just to have his J.D. whiskey “his
way”, to at least be conversational pieces for the man who
knew and used all the popular street slangs of his day.
4. One will never know since the man is not around to speak for
himself – he most certainly would have had something to say
about whiskey stones – but whiskey rocks, like them or not,
could very well have been a hit with the first teen idol. For
those of us who are alive, it is pretty easy to try whiskey Frank
Sinatra’s way, using his very own recipe or have it with the
trendy whiskey stones. In other words, unlike Frank, we
actually have the chance to get the best of both worlds as the
stones are easily accessible online on sites like Amazon and are
relatively inexpensive.
