School of Technology

Introduction
Undertaking this assignment will enable you to disseminate your materials
selection and stress analysis knowledge to a wider audience through
articulation in the form of a technical report. It will also allow you to apply this
knowledge through the use of stress analysis software for undertaking
engineering design analysis, followed by analytical decisions based on
achieved results.
Completion of this assignment will provide an element of Professional
Development through improvement in: writing accurately and effectively in a
Technical Report format, providing data analysis and interpolation process,
interpretation of numerical information, as well as developing sufficient
mathematical and data analysis skills.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this assignment, the student should be able to:Apply advanced materials concepts to the analysis of specific high technology
components in case studies to enhance performance.
Formulate the stress analysis relevant to a range of situations.

The Brief
Section 1 Component / Part Selection (0% of weighting)
For the initial part of your assessment, you need to make a personal selection
of a component or part and ensure that you will be able to conduct hand
calculations, modelling and simulation, be careful with the complexity of the
component you choose as too big a task can lead to time and planning
issues.
Please let the module leader know, if you are unable to select any
component.
Hint: It is better if the component has a failure already

Section 2 Hand calculation and material selection (30% of
weighting-30 Marks Max)
For this section you must provide a free body diagram of your component and
provide an analysis of the loading for the component when at maximum duty.
© Division of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
Page 2 of 7
School of Technology
You need to think about how the load will be applied to the component, where
the constraints are, etc. The details for your hand calculation and free body
diagram MUST be conducted on the component and shown in the report.
Proper material indices should be established based on operating condition
and other generic criteria (such as cost, eco friendliness). The initial material
selection (using CES) can be based on the hand calculation results, with
refinements added once information has been captured from the simulation by
applying advanced material concept
Hint: Detailed reasoning for choosing an appropriate material (based on the
application of material merit indices such as the cost, eco friendliness) will be
advantageous. Consider a weighting matrix to provide an in depth evaluation.

Section 3 Modelling (10% of weighting-10 Marks Max)
The CAD model MUST be modelled and owned by the student.
SolidWorks 2012/2013 student version (when it is available) MUST be used
as the main CAD software.

Section 4 Software Analysis (40% of weighting—40 Marks Max)
The software output validation MUST be conducted on every aspect of
simulation.
Hint: Consider reviewing the online tutorials for the validation process.
A minimum of three or more Finite Element Analysis Simulation MUST be
chosen from simulations such as Static, Pressure, Buckling, Thermal, Vertical
Gravity, Horizontal Gravity, Vibration, Drop test and/or Pressure vessel design
analysis.
This will continue with Design Optimisation which MUST BE USED. After
completing the Design Optimisation, you need to re-run the previous
simulations and Fatigue analysis to ensure you’re your improved design
meets the requirement.
The report will require all the evidence that such analyses have been
conducted.
Hint: Images mean nothing without an explanation and annotations

Section 5 Report (20% weighting—20 Marks Max)
This should be a report or essay of 3000 words (±10%). It should be a
reflection on the design parameters, materials, FEA analysis and
recommendation of improving the design. It is up to you how you interpret
this; it should be based on critical reflection of this assignment. It may be that
you wish to include experiences/opportunities you see in your work place or
the real world. You may wish to research triumphs/failures of FEA

(Sciencedirect.com) and how they relate to your experience in this
assignment. You may discuss organisations, costs etc. It is open-ended (but
the number of words you write isn’t!)

Submission Requirements
e-Submission
In order to reduce unnecessary travel and queuing time for students, the
University has moved to electronic submission (eSubmission) of all
assignments where this is possible. Your tutor will advise you if this is not the
case for the assignments of this module.
Start by taking a look at the eSub website www.derby.ac.uk/esub as this is the
main site supporting students with eSubmission and provides support
documents and videos to talk you through the whole process.
You will also find a printable guide In the Assessments area of your module
called Electronic Submission Guide for Students this will talk you through
the submission process and guide you to further resources to help you submit
your work.
The assignment report element will need to be MAXIMUM of 3300 words
(3000 (±10%)). in length.
Your report must be submitted by uploading through the Report Assignment
drop box for Turnitin before the date and time stated on the cover sheet.
Your FEA files must be submitted through the FEA File Assessment drop box
Remember to save all Files in one Directory and then add to a Zip file so all
your work is compressed into one file.
Both drop boxes are available on course resources. See image below.

  • 2. School of Technology Introduction Undertaking this assignment will enable you to disseminate your materials selection and stress analysis knowledge to a wider audience through articulation in the form of a technical report. It will also allow you to apply this knowledge through the use of stress analysis software for undertaking engineering design analysis, followed by analytical decisions based on achieved results. Completion of this assignment will provide an element of Professional Development through improvement in: writing accurately and effectively in a Technical Report format, providing data analysis and interpolation process, interpretation of numerical information, as well as developing sufficient mathematical and data analysis skills. Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this assignment, the student should be able to:Apply advanced materials concepts to the analysis of specific high technology components in case studies to enhance performance. Formulate the stress analysis relevant to a range of situations. The Brief Section 1 Component / Part Selection (0% of weighting) For the initial part of your assessment, you need to make a personal selection of a component or part and ensure that you will be able to conduct hand calculations, modelling and simulation, be careful with the complexity of the component you choose as too big a task can lead to time and planning issues. Please let the module leader know, if you are unable to select any component. Hint: It is better if the component has a failure already Section 2 Hand calculation and material selection (30% of weighting-30 Marks Max) For this section you must provide a free body diagram of your component and provide an analysis of the loading for the component when at maximum duty. © Division of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Page 2 of 7
  • 3. School of Technology You need to think about how the load will be applied to the component, where the constraints are, etc. The details for your hand calculation and free body diagram MUST be conducted on the component and shown in the report. Proper material indices should be established based on operating condition and other generic criteria (such as cost, eco friendliness). The initial material selection (using CES) can be based on the hand calculation results, with refinements added once information has been captured from the simulation by applying advanced material concept Hint: Detailed reasoning for choosing an appropriate material (based on the application of material merit indices such as the cost, eco friendliness) will be advantageous. Consider a weighting matrix to provide an in depth evaluation. Section 3 Modelling (10% of weighting-10 Marks Max) The CAD model MUST be modelled and owned by the student. SolidWorks 2012/2013 student version (when it is available) MUST be used as the main CAD software. Section 4 Software Analysis (40% of weighting—40 Marks Max) The software output validation MUST be conducted on every aspect of simulation. Hint: Consider reviewing the online tutorials for the validation process. A minimum of three or more Finite Element Analysis Simulation MUST be chosen from simulations such as Static, Pressure, Buckling, Thermal, Vertical Gravity, Horizontal Gravity, Vibration, Drop test and/or Pressure vessel design analysis. This will continue with Design Optimisation which MUST BE USED. After completing the Design Optimisation, you need to re-run the previous simulations and Fatigue analysis to ensure you’re your improved design meets the requirement. The report will require all the evidence that such analyses have been conducted. Hint: Images mean nothing without an explanation and annotations Section 5 Report (20% weighting—20 Marks Max) This should be a report or essay of 3000 words (±10%). It should be a reflection on the design parameters, materials, FEA analysis and recommendation of improving the design. It is up to you how you interpret this; it should be based on critical reflection of this assignment. It may be that you wish to include experiences/opportunities you see in your work place or the real world. You may wish to research triumphs/failures of FEA © Division of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Page 3 of 7

Submission Requirements e-Submission In order to reduce unnecessary travel and queuing time for students, the University has moved to electronic submission (eSubmission) of all assignments where this is possible. Your tutor will advise you if this is not the case for the assignments of this module. Start by taking a look at the eSub website www.derby.ac.uk/esub as this is the main site supporting students with eSubmission and provides support documents and videos to talk you through the whole process. You will also find a printable guide In the Assessments area of your module called Electronic Submission Guide for Students this will talk you through the submission process and guide you to further resources to help you submit your work. The assignment report element will need to be MAXIMUM of 3300 words (3000 (±10%)). in length. Your report must be submitted by uploading through the Report Assignment drop box for Turnitin before the date and time stated on the cover sheet. Your FEA files must be submitted through the FEA File Assessment drop box Remember to save all Files in one Directory and then add to a Zip file so all your work is compressed into one file. Both drop boxes are available on course resources. See image below. © Division of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Page 5 of 7
