1. Speaking Personally...
Steven Edward Sullivan...
QWho inspired you to get where your are today?
A. My grandfather, an Irish immigrant and lifelong entrepreneur,
who started his career working in logging camps in northern Minnesota
in the early 1900’s, and eventually pursued his dream to start his own
business that became a thriving and successful logging, lumber and real
estate development company. His tenacity and perseverance in his
own life and business pursuits have been the cornerstones of my own
professional endeavors.
QWhat do you love most about your work?
A. As a serial entrepreneur, developing a new business or product
from scratch, and gathering the necessary resources and employee talent
to see it succeed, is truly an incredibly rewarding experience. The strategy
and problem solving skills needed to thrive in this environment is one of the
most rewarding aspects of the work I have been involved in and will certainly
be a critical part of my future professional goals and objectives.
QHow can an entrepreneur succeed in a larger, more
bureaucratic company?
A. Adaptability is an essential leadership trait of every successful
entrepreneur. This skill is the byproduct of failure, rejection, lack of resources
and impossible business challenges that had to be resolved in order to
survive and thrive within the entrepreneurial environment. An entrepreneur’s
ability to adapt in a larger firm, and apply the professional resolve needed
to produce extraordinary results in an environment where limited resources
are no longer an issue, can be a significant strategic advantage to the
organization. By leveraging these skills, the larger organization can achieve
breakthroughs in performance plateaus, product/service innovation and
team performance.
QWhat distinct advantage will you bring to your next organization in
terms of leading successful restructuring/change initiatives?
A. Companies need to continually assess the effectiveness of
existing systems, policies and procedures to ensure that they are
optimizing organizational performance. This is even more essential
in an entrepreneurial oriented business environment where change
and growth are working hand in hand. My experience in both small,
growing organizations along with large complex and mature operating
environments, has helped me develop the skills necessary to recognize
and address through a team oriented and collaborative effort, the need
to change or to make significant structural changes to accommodate
the organization’s mission and vision.
