In her opening keynote for the Library 2.014 Worldwide Virtual Conference, Dr. Sandra Hirsh, professor and director of the San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Information, discussed the role of information professionals in a global community and the importance of the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree. Hirsh also talked about how information professionals can become “rock stars” in their organizations and information environments. The Library 2.014 Worldwide Virtual Conference is the fourth annual event in a series of free virtual conferences co-founded by the SJSU School of Information. Dr. Michael Stephens participated on a panel discussing the use of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for professional development at the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) 80th General Conference and Assembly, held in Lyon, France from Aug. 16, 2014 to Aug. 22, 2014. Stephens presented some of his findings from his ongoing research with The Hyperlinked Library MOOC. “The panel in France was also about the broader idea that large scale learning is something that information professionals should be using, and about how it supports professional development,” said Stephens. An assistant professor at the San Jose State University School of Information, Stephens teaches courses in the iSchool's exclusively online Master of Library and Information Science degree program.

Dr. Lili Luo presented her research on how reference librarians handle ethical dilemmas at work at the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) 80th General Conference and Assembly, held in Lyon, France from Aug. 16, 2014 to Aug. 22, 2014. Lou conducted a survey study to explore how reference librarians handle ethical dilemmas at work and shared the survey results at the pre-conference satellite meeting organized by the IFLA Committee on Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE). Luo is an associate professor at the San Jose State University School of Information. She teaches courses in the iSchool's exclusively online Master of Library and Information Science degree program.

The school’s director, Dr. Sandra Hirsh, reviews the skillsets today’s employers seek in applicants, discusses the growing need to re-tool and update skills, and addresses why information professionals should choose the SJSU information school for their career development needs. Professional development opportunities highlighted include a fully online Post-Master’s Certificate in Library and Information Science program that features seven career pathways, fully online graduate-level courses open to everyone, virtual colloquium presentations (FREE online seminars), and MOOCs (FREE online courses), and more! This presentation was originally given on March 25, 2014, during a virtual meeting of corporate librarians.
