2. Introduction
• Social – People now use social media for practically everything – advice on what to
buy, where to go, what to do, etc.Therefore, a social media strategy has become a
must for all enterprises.
• Mobile – Mobile technologies have changed the way people communicate, shop,
work, and so on.Thus, enterprises must also ensure that their applications are mobile
ready.
• Analytics –The huge amount of available data can be analyzed to understand how,
when and where people consume certain goods and services. Enterprises can tap this
as an unbeatable competitive advantage.
• Cloud –The immense power of cloud computing fosters innovation and increases
productivity.
• Thus, these four technologies (collectively known as SMAC) currently drive enterprise
innovation.

3. The SMAC stack
• The components of SMAC work together like an ecosystem, where each
technology drives the others to maximize its effect.
• The combined effect is many-fold as compared to the individual effect.
• Therefore, SMAC enables enterprises leverage the cloud for storing huge
volumes of multi-structured customer data, generated over mobile devices
and social media and analyze these data sets for business advantage by
enhancing customer experience.

4. Trends
• People will look for anytime, anywhere, any-device convenience in the goods and
services they consume.
• IT departments will not only be processing the huge amounts of data but also will
become capable of learning from it and making intelligent decisions.
• By 2017, about 10% of the computers will be learning rather than only processing.
• SMAC will become sole formula for business success. Social, Mobile, Analytics and
Cloud technologies form one integrated stack, where each function enables another to
maximize their effect.
• Through this new wave, IT will become more integrated into business operations than
ever before.

5. Interest Areas
• The idea of predicting behavior or identifying relationships/patterns greatly
fascinates me. Correctly analyzing the immense data available around us is an
exciting and challenging task.
• The social media is growing extensively reaching every part of the globe and
hence this is exploited by the enterprises to reach its customers and increase
the target market, producing a plethora of structured to unstructured data.
• I would like to work on enabling technologies to learn from the immense data
available. I’m extremely interested in machine learning through big data
analytics.

6. Big Data Analytics
• It is widely used in:
• retail enterprises - to anticipate customer needs and preferences, thereby enhancing
shopping experiences. For example, e-commerce website like myntra, flipkart give
suggestions on what to buy based on your previous selections or purchases.
• healthcare - to decode DNA strings to find new cures and also to understand and predict
diseases patterns. For example, combining medical records with social media analytics
enables us to predict diseases outbreaks by listening to what people say – “In bed with a
fever ”
• sports - to track performance of players and give feedback on how to improve
• and even to predict and hence prevent criminal or terrorist activities.
• Big data analytics has become an integral part of every organization’s strategy
to capture the market and enhance user experience. It is an extremely
challenging area with a large scope for innovation.
