Jimmy Carter was born in 1924 in Plains, Georgia to Earl Carter, a peanut warehouser who served in the Georgia legislature, and Lillian Gordy, a nurse. He attended Georgia Southwestern College and Georgia Tech before graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. That same year, he married Rosalynn Smith, and they had four children together. Carter served in the Navy for seven years before returning to Georgia to manage his family's peanut farm after his father's death in 1953.
