About George Lee
George Lee was born in 1904 in Edward, Mississippi and
was murdered in 1955 by a group of white people. George
was shot on a neighborhood street while driving on his car.
The attack came days after he received a threatening note
demanding to take his name off from the voting rolls. The
incident occurred less than a month after his speech. He is
married to Rosebud, and she ran a small printing business.
He was also able to graduate high school.
George Lee was an NAACP (National
Association for the Advancement of Colored
People)official, and supported Civil Rights. He
was vice president of the Regional Council of
Negro Leadership, the leader of an African
American civil rights, a minister, and an
entrepreneur.
His Positions
His Legacy
Once the death of George Lee never generated the same
outrage as the Murder of Emmett Till in August 1955, the
consequences were genuinely important. He exemplified
an earlier generation of activists who used business
success into a launching pad into civil rights. Lee paved the
way for great leaders to be born out of the African
American community, he provided them with an opportunity
that was second to none, because of his passion to have
African Americans voice their opinion through the voting
process.
