The Sensory System Eye and
Ear
Mawu Ogo
Human Eye Information
The eyeball is an organ that produce an
external images through a nervous system
called the optic nerve to the brain.
The brain then translate the image and
show us the same image that came from
the optic nerve.
There are many structures that are
associated to the eyeball which include eye
muscles, eyelids, conjunctiva, and lacrimal
apparatus.
How the eyes work?
The coordination of muscles in the external
eye occurs making both your eyes move
together.
The correct amount of light is shown by the
pupil.
The focus on the light is shown to the retina
by the lenses.
Structures of the Eye
The eyelids are over the eye that protect
our eye from particles , injury from the sun
or even intense light and trauma. On the
edge of the eyelid are eyelashes which
protect the eye from any particles.
Conjunctiva is an eye mucous membrane
which protect the eye by keeping the
eyeball into the socket.
Eye Structure
The sclera is the white posterior section in the
eye that helps support the eyeball.
The cornea is transparent, lacks blood vessels
and bends or refracts light rays as they enter
the eye
The Ciliary Body is anterior and contains the
ciliary muscles used to focus the eye
The ciliary body adapt to change the shape
of the lens in a process called
accommodation
The vascular layer of blood vessels which
contain a thin posterior membrane is called
the choroid
Structures of the Eye
Continue….
Lacrimal Apparatus- is a gland found in
the outer corner of the eyelid that produce
the tears we cry.
The purpose of tears is to wash and
lubricate the anterior layer of the eyeball.
The Lacrimal duct then collects and direct
your tears into the nasolacrimal duct.
The duct the drains the tears into the nasal
cavity.
Ear Structure
The Ear is an organ that detects
sound, which aid the body in balance
and position.
There are three structures of the ear
called the outer, middle and inner ear.
External Ear
The external ear consist of auricle
which is also called the pinna. It is a
funnel-like structure that lead through
the temporal bones of the skull.
External auditory meatus consist of a
gland that secretes wax.
Middle Ear
The middle ear are connected to the top
of pharynx through the Eustachian tube
which helps equalize the ear pressure.
Middle ear consist of the tympanic cavity
where the membrane is located and also
the ossicles .
These structures also include the
Malleus (hammer)
Incus (anvil)
Stapes (stirrup)
Internal Ear
Cochlea is snail-shaped that contains
the organ that we use to hear. The
cochlea connects to the oval window in
the middle ear.
Membranous Labyrinth are receptors
that sense equilibrium and hearing
,where fluid filled tubes and chambers
are located.
Semicircular canal and vestibule
contain receptors and endolymphs that
help our body maintain equilibrium.
Internal Ear Continue….
Perilymph – a fluid that is located
within the cochlea found in the inner
ear.
Osseous labyrinth is a rigid, bony
outer wall that is located within the
inner ear.
