2. Explain The Project
The project was to Use DTP and programs such as Photoshop to use as image
manipulation. We also needed to produce the front page of a magazine for a
school/college magazine, we needed a photograph of a student in medium
close-up which would be laid over text and a mast head this was done so we
could produce our intelligence in the various programs.
Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a music
magazine.
You will be assessed on 3 aspects of the work done.
Research and planning 20 marks
Production 60 marks
Evaluation 20 marks
3. Audience Research
This is the questionnaire that I'm going to be handing out to the public, with the results it would
give me a good idea on the genre and audience I should aim at.
What is your gender?
Male Female
If you read a magazine what would you choose?
Q Vibe FHM Respect
What would you like to see in a magazine?
Sport Music Fashion Art
What features/Events would you like to see in the magazine?
Pictures CV Help Other
How Many magazines do you read a month?
1-3 3-5 none more
4. Audience Profile
Who is your audience?
From my research, I have found that my audience are mainly male
with the age ranging from 13-16 with these results it would help me
aim at a specific audience. For example the articles that are going to
be made, need to be stressed and looked at with deep concern on
whether they are going to be a younger or older audience.
What are their interests?
From the research that was done, I see that they into clothes and
fashion, but are also a passionate music lover. They are people who
like to buy the magazine 4-5 times a week the age group shows that
they go to school/college.
What magazine do they buy?
Magazines, that they would buy are usually passionate magazines,
for example Indie/Q clean and fashion based. Because they are a
younger audience its expected to not have a huge response on
magazines such as VIBE.
5. Mast head
The masthead is put at the
top of the page so it can
give the audience an image,
Its also in a red/pink colour
as it represents Harris
academy Greenwich I
wanted it to standout and
have a point on the page.
Straplines
The strap lines engages as it
relates to that particular
audience with the reader
and can tell the type of
articles that would be put
into this it also may draw
the in with the different
catchy puns or different
sentence breakers.

also make sure that it covers
the top of the page to make
it more pushed forward at
the audience and stand out.
Strapline
I have chosen a bold and
simple colour for the
strapline this is to make the
magazine seem more
professional and just clean.
Centre Image
I had chosen this
centre image
because it’s a
straight pose and
also creates
mystery which is
wanted. Its also a

8. Comparison Of Images
AFTER
BEFORE
For this image It was taken with a HD camera and then exported onto the computer from there I
used photoshop to add variables for example brightness rates and some of the out glow effects,
I used shadows and also render settings to edit this image. The glow was used to make his
shoulders and head more bright This was good because It made the image stand out more. I also
used the shadow tool to reverse the shadow on his body this then made from the chest below
stand out a lot more.
10. Target Audience
This is my questionnaire that I am going to be handing out to males of the age of 16-25. the
questions that I have chosen to ask will give me the chance to create the magazine and find the
target audience.
How old are you?
16-18 19-21 21+
Are you working?
Yes No
How do you buy a magazine?
Shops Online Other
What genre of music do you listen to?
Pop RnB Indie Metal/Rock Other
Have you been to a festival?
Yes No
Would you like to go to a festival?
Yes No
11. Audience Results
These was used to make sure that they can get the target audience All of the data below then
helped with making sue which audience I could aim at. Getting these results was got through
handed out surveys and a total of 63 people done them. I got the data back and then had to
put them into percentages on the results that was given to me from the results I could then
figure out which was the most popular genre. I could have done better next time if I asked
why they had chosen these and what they may have taken for their second choice as it made
it bias.
62% 16-18 18% 19-21 20% 20+
36% Working 64% Not working
26% Shops 32% Online 42% Other
10% Pop 22% RnB 8% Indie 12% Metal/rock 48% Other

62% Would like to 38% Would not
12. Audience Profile:
Who is your target Audience:
My magazine is for the pop and the more hipster side, this is they are going to be from the age range of
13-19 which is the educational level for students. They are going to more of a interest in music
“Passionate” and they are going to like festivals, This is from the results that I have gathered.
What are their Interests:
Their interests are going to be more of a outdoors and someone that lives on bands and has a interest
in the different types of music. They may be into festivals and having the fact that they can be out there
listening to the music. They are more of a group that would be into fashion.
What Magazines do they buy:
My target audience is going to focus on buying the magazines such as Q and vibe more of the Pop and
the types that they can then buy more fashion magazines and things that they can focus on for example
they may be someone who then can have the fact that they can buy others “Respect”
How else could you classify them?
A more fashion and live life to the fullest, they are a group that cares about things they may want to do.
This can be from passion in music and making sure that they can then keep up to date with the new
songs. “Hipsters” Is the only word that can describe them.
How will you find this information out?
This information would be found out, when I hand out the survey and they can then be the ones who
sign it. I would add the results together and find out what it really is. This could come from them giving
me a answer for the question and then me getting the data and add it to a pie chart and work out the
data. I can easily find the audience type through that method.
13. Target Audience
From my research I have a understanding that the target audience that I have researched are
going to be 20-25 males. That listen to Pop and other types of music magazines that have got
beat. Some of their favoured magazines that they may read, are the following. Q,VIBE ,
Respect They enjoy being a passionate reader and going to festivals to listen to music. I am
going to base the magazine around this particular audience.
Below Are some image's that may relate to the audience that in particular read the music magazine.
15. Target Audience Research
The audience type when looking at Vibe’s
magazine you would find that they may be
something along the lines of more males then
females 55% of males read, and only 45% of
females read. The audience age groups that are
more likely to read, this magazine was 18-34
year olds at a high percentage (67%) and with
21+ 87% this means the main age range is from
18+. The education type for this magazine, is
55% in college. Vibe magazine, is aimed at a
multi-cultural audience because it has
something for everyone. They are going beyond
music and going for people that like different
things such as fashion and the outstanding
response from younger audiences, they want
trendsetting audience types.
16. Target Audience Research Q
They are a younger audience, into more of the
band and the pop music scene. They are found
to be passionate music listeners. They have got
more male readers then there is female
readers on the magazine type females 55% of
males read, and only 45% of females read. The
audience that reads is more of a middle classed
and a middle aged audience. They are going
beyond music and going for people that like
different things such as fashion and the
outstanding response from younger audiences,
they want trendsetting audience types. They
want to try and set a new impression.
17. Target Audience Research Respect
The audience type for this magazine, is
completely different to the other two, as this is
for a more of a older aged and a more lower
classed audience, This is not made for those
that then can have a passion for music “Going
to concerts” this results in people from a more
of a suburb group/cultural class. For respect
you would find they may live in a older and not
as wealthy of a area.

models head, because he is the main image within
this magazine.

The image that is used, is strong and cantered. The
image may be portraying he's very big and stands
out, he's looking a the camera which then shows
that he's is indirect with the audience reading.

The colours that has been chosen for this may have
been something that can then be bland and almost
one set of colours dark and evil which can then stand

are all the same fonts almost like the colours which
are bland and the same,

Music Magazine Cover Analysis
21. When looking at both reader audiences, for the two different types of magazines you may find that they both aim at two
different kinds of audiences. For example when looking at the audience (Readers) of Vibe you would see that they may
not like to read a calm atmosphere where as looking at the melody music, they may not be completely sorrow to
listening to such music as rap and a genre of its type. When comparing the age gap you have got to know that the type of
audience that may be looked at (Melody) would be older because its aimed at a older audience in the music type. The
magazine (Melody Maker) is therefore bought to a older audience (Age range) Looking at the hip hop magazine its aimed
to a huge range of ages.
When looking at the masthead for both magazines you would see that the mastheads are completely different. For
example the masthead in the melody magazine would be shown to see as a out of the way more a pushed back. But then
looking at the hip hop magazine (Vibe) you would see that its more in the centre of the page and pushed forwards. This
can then create the effect and the evidential hip hop magazine style. The melody maker masthead is more pushed to the
back, because its not something that they feel needs to be seen and standing out so that the reader can see. It’s there to
make sure that they know, with the visual effect on the wavy lines and the out frown red and white can then attract the
audience to read and know the type of magazine.
The centre image of the hip hop magazine is presented and pushed forward. Almost giving the visual effect to the audience
on knowing the magazine. The way the image is positioned is vital for a magazine such as vibe, as this can then be showing
the audience the magazine type. For example when looking and comparing the melody magazine to vibe you would see the
difference in positioning of the camera. When looking at the hip hop you would see that he has been centered and kept in
the middle which then can show his attitude. Almost setup for the magazine. But looking at the melody maker you would
see that he was not positioned almost unplanned and was taken on a camera and added to the background for the paper.
There is only one supporting image when looking at the melody maker magazine. For example the bottom they have got
many bands that can then be there to show and create the visual effect of attracting the audience to read the magazine. For
example if someone is to like a band they may recognise the magazine and can help support the magazines audience
(Intake) this can also give the reader, the right help to understand the bands and the other things that they may notice with
the magazine. But looking at vibe they use not supporting images which then can lead to no help on the user.
When looking at the straplines on both of the magazines, you would find that Hip hop magazine uses a more vibrant and
exiled version of a strapline where it can then be put forward as a rhetorical question. “Is that Chris brown” This can then
mislead the audience to keep on reading, this can be used to advertise articles or even extend the front page thoughts.
Whereas looking at the Melody maker they leave the audience with real facts that can then be said to describing and explain
the band that is going to be advertised insight. This can then be used for ‘dressing’ up the cover. For example having a well
known melody band on the front cover could then lead to them wanting and them buying the magazine to read about the
article this is the “Reader effect”
22. Within the magazine vibe you would find that Chris brown is looking straight at the camera which can then give the effect that he's is
almost looking at the reader, the person who is going to be buying the magazine. But when looking at the other magazine “Melody
makers” you would find that they are then going to be in a different stance of effect. So looking at the two magazine you find the melody
makers are there which then the audition and positioning of the eyes (Looking) shows that they are then in different possessions. For
example one of these could be the fact that the front two are looking direct into the audience, and the one at the back is looking away
from the audience, which then can give him the more authority.
When looking at the magazine cover vibe you would find that its more of a serious and extended cultural view. It shows him as
meaning business and more of a stronger outlook on the overall view. For example the mise en scene, this was chosen for the fact its
strong shows the cultural factor, and also shows the attitude that he has got. The chains the hat and the facial expression which then
represents the good and bad factors about him. But when looking at the representation of melody maker you would find that they are
going to be shown as a more calm and melody.
The barcode is located within the bottom left this then allows the user to have a more clean and easier way of allocating where the
actual price and the scan maybe. Most magazines do this to follow the guide line that was set, and also to make sure that they can
easily allocate other information on the page. For both magazines the choosing of where the barcode and the actual price was shown
is very wise, this is because it’s more out of the way easier to find and they can then use the other space and anything else that they
may choose to go on the page in the right places.
When looking at the props that have been used within the magazine cover you will find that they have used props that can then find
and describe the magazine into further depth. For example looking at the props that have been used within the magazine “Vibe” you
would find that they are then further more described as a more stylish and strong out put. Examples of this would be the chains that
has been used and the lighting where he is standing (Lighting). But when you are to look at the magazine melody makers, I find that
they use less light and have a more unprofessional picture. For example they are used, to show the natural effect of melody magazine.
The main picture and frame (Melody Stereotyped) ‘Retro and relaxed.
For example when looking at the magazine covers you would find that they are going to be shown as the strapline the images are more
indicated and pressured by the masthead. The example of this would be “Feeder (Melody makers)” This is shown to give courage to the
band that is shown on the front cover. Feeder is the bands name which is going to be the centred image for the melody makers. Vibe is
showing the model in the front cover and leaving the strapline to describe and show the effect, example of this would be the fact that
the strap line leads of with “Is that Chris brown” which the person who is going to be modelling the whole thing on the front page of
the paper is actually Chris brown.

Music Magazine Covers Mock-Up
26. They may have put the image thee with the bullets on the
sophisticated lines of content, this would be because they
can then go on and have the main articles and the music
shown. For example the bullets are on the lines of the
exclusive bands.
The fonts that has been used for the “Q Contents” Uses
specific sans to make sure that some of the text can then
stand out more and makes it a more of a incognito look.
The bottom image with Wayne Rooney was chosen to be
at a slant because its got nothing to do with actual music.
Its just a article on him. This was done like so to conceal
the clean and easy feel to the contents (Showing its
nothing to do with Q Magazine.
The background that was chosen for the image was a
clean and following the standard that they use for their
magazines.
Each of the main article are underlined with the bullet,
and they also have their own description to each of the
articles (Used to draw the user in further)
Contents Page Analysis
27. The background that is contrasted within the magazine, is that it
contrasts the other features on the magazine contents. One of
these is that they have got the white colour texts and the vibrant
yellow for the page numbers.
Another thing that should be noted is the positioning of the
image tat was used within the magazine for example it was
positioned just like the other content pages they make “In a
clean left aligned” This then can make sure that they can then
see a clean look.
The text/Features that has been shown is showing the page
numbers and showing it into more detail for example this shows
the page number in the colour yellow. Which then corresponds
with the background. They have also got the white text colours
that can then expand and contrast to the background.
The features and the navigation is all allocated nicely and shown
on the left which its put into place with a perfect alignment this
being said it makes it more clean and easier viable to the
audience.
The vibe logo is done in a bar code shape this then can be used
too make sure that it can be seen to be a more viable and seen
option for the magazine.

31. Masthead Analysis
The mast head for the Q magazine is a more and vibrant look, this is because its clean and stays
to the audience profile. This is also a very nice and easy way to show the magazine with the
contrast with the Red and the white background.
Vibe has got a easy looking masthead, this is not there to show off and stand out. It
follows the same feel and uses the font/text wise. For example this looks sharp and
stand out, for the audience that’s what the whole magazine is about “Sharp” It’s a very
clean and easy magazine masthead that was used.
Respect magazine masthead choose vibrant red colours to stand out and be sharp. The
full stop at the end makes it more of a strong text, this is something that can then
stand out the audience, and then get the eye.
The writing for the XXL is a bold and stronger linking text. Its also in a white writing format
which can then contrast with the background. This a very strong contrast with them having red
then the white text to go with the background overall look and show the image with what its
supposed to be and stand out.
NME the magazine went for a complete overall different look, they have got borders
around the text which then makes it more bold and a stronger text, they have also got
the red white and black, this makes the text stand out more, the other “Sub
Sequential part” Under the masthead “New musical Express” this is showing the
audience what the magazine is about and what the magazine name is. This is a
example of a acronym, they have shortened the word to go with the audience and
show them the musical magazine.
32. Masthead Planning
Credential Vibes
Credential Vibe
I want to make the magazine mast head clean like Q or GQ they both have clean
and easily read and huge fan bases. I want to make sure that the magazine looks as
clean as possible and having this font does not have sharp edges or look bad in
fact it looks good and also it’s a clean piece of work. Which is what I'm aiming for.
Having this text makes the magazine look professional also and makes it stand out.
33. Masthead Planning
CREDENTIAL VIBES - Accord
Heavy SF
CREDENTIALVIBES - Myriad Pro
CREDENTIAL VIBES - Adobe Gothic
Std B
CREDENTIAL VIBES - Aharoni
CREDENTIAL VIBES - Bauhaus 93I like these fonts as they are clean and they can have something to do with the work and the clean look that I am going to go for in the end it
can then help out with making sure that the magazine actually looks clean and overall they have got the clean out look they all remind me of
Q and also GQ which are the magazines that I want mine to eventually look like.
34. Masthead Changes
Towards the final piece of the work I changed, the
mastheads name to ‘PURITY’ I thought this was a good
changed because Purity had a much better and
meaningful name. It was also a more engaging name
with the audience that it was going for. I also think this
overall made the page look cleaner as it was a short
masthead instead of a big long text.
35. Strapline Analysis

36. Strapline Planning
SLUMS TO RICHES
I want this to be my main strapline as it says something about the centre image, I want my centre image to
similar to the actual pose of the centre image this can help when im going to be adding it beside this would
that is seen and I will make sure that I add effects to give it a more clean and standout to the audience. I
that I can keep it bold and have it Myriad pro as it’s the text that I'm going to use to follow through with

Red and blue is the colour scheme that that was chosen so I have chosen to do this so that there is not just

The prince of music genre is just a pun and a name for someone who is dominant over music and has

professional look. It also went with the genre for the music magazine although it

Using Photoshop I gave edited some of the balance and the
colours to improve the tone of his skin and make the image more
engaging. I have used colour burn to give his clothes and face
greater texture.
I have only chosen to use one image for the contents page
and I thought that this image was good to use, for example I
edited and just added colour balance and some simple effects
that could make the image stand out more for example
adding brightness to the face, and making just the face glow
