Promoting Open Access at the Cyprus University of Technology: survey results

Today the Open Access movement gains more and more followers. The Library and Information Services at the Cyprus University of Technology has defined Open Access as one of its main strategies. Considering the current economic crisis, Open Access appears to be a solution to the reduction of funds at the academic institutions. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the perception and reaction of the academic community of the Cyprus University of Technology towards Open Access. The Library and Information Services conducted a survey in order to examine the familiarity of the academic community with Open Access and to define any difficulties that they find. The survey results showed that the academic community is generally aware of the Open Access movement, but a lot of effort and work has to be done in order to make the academic community to trust and use Open Access. The survey also showed that Ktisis, the institutional repository of the Cyprus University of Technology, is not being used effectively by the academics. It was proved that the deposits in Ktisis do not reach the desired level and the reason is that the academic community is not aware of its existence. Therefore the academic community has to be convinced to prefer Open Access publishers for the deposit of their academic publications instead of commercial publishers and to retain sufficient rights adopting the SPARC addendum. Also, to promote open access through “author pay model” like Biomed Central.

Research Methodology

• The data for this survey was gathered using an
online questionnaire

• 101 responses
• The questionnaire was structured in three
parts

Results

• 84% are aware of Open Access scientific journals in
their field
• They often use articles from Open Access journals for
research and/or scientific purposes (Mean 3)

Ktisis

• The 72% are not aware of Ktisis
• Another 33% is used to publish in commercial
publisher journals (Elsevier, Springer, Willey, Sage,
etc.)

Publishing factors
• The 47% prefer Open Access for the
dissemination of their publications

Publishing factors
• 77% believe that work published in
commercial journals has higher impact factor

Copyright and digital preservation

• 61% think that copyright can be preserved in
the same way either in commercial publishers
or in Open Access

• 68% think that digital preservation can be
achieved in the same way either in
commercial publishers or in Open Access.

Author addendum

• 87% is not negotiating the terms and
conditions with the publishers

• 89% would like the university to develop an
author addendum policy

• Author addendum policies are very important
because with this agreement the author keeps
the critical rights

Future perspectives
• Better strategy for promoting Open Access
and “author pay model”

• Make Ktisis compatible with Europeana and
OpenAire

Open science comes on the heels of the fourth paradigm of science, which is based on data-intensive scientific discovery, and represents a new paradigm shift, affecting the entire research lifecycle and all aspects of science execution, collaboration, communication, innovation. From supporting and using (big) data infrastructures for data archiving and analysis, to continuously sharing with peers all types of research results at any stage of the research endeavor and to communicating them to the broad public or commercial audiences, openness moves science away from being a concern exclusively of researchers and research performing organisations and brings it to center stage of our connected society, requiring the engagement of a much wider range of stakeholders: digital and research infrastructures, policy decision makers, funders, industry, and the public itself. This presentation focuses on two Europe’s flagship initiatives for Open Science, the European Open Science Cloud and Open AIRE (www.openaire.eu), and discusses the role of the libraries in the wider data ecosystem as that of (i) an enabler for openness, FAIRness, participation, transparency and social impact, active in the preservation, curation, publication and dissemination of digital scientific materials, and (ii) a multiplier for training and supporting scientists and non-scientists alike (citizen science, open innovation) for a harmonic co-existence in this emerging environment.
