• Os verbos irregulares podem ser:
– REGULARES:
I played tennis yesterday.
– IRREGULARES (consultar a lista de verbos
irregulares)
She ate ice-cream in winter.
*to eat(comer): ate (passado)
3. Forming the simple past tense
(REGULAR VERBS)
• Para formar o passado simple dos verbos regulares
acrescentamos ED ao verbo:
BOIL --- BOILED
FILL --- FILLED
• Exceções:
– Se o verbo terminar em –E: acrescenta-se apelas
–D
LIVE --- LIVED
DATE --- DATED
– Se o verbo terminar em consonante + Y: troca-se
o Y por I
TRY --- TRIED
CRY --- CRIED
– Se o verbo terminar em –L o –P duplicamos la
conconante: (inglês britânico)
TRAVEL --- TRAVELLED
WORSHIP --- WORSHIPPED
– Se o verbo for monossílado e terminar em
consoante+ vogal + consonante (expecto W o Y):
duplicar a última consonante
TAP --- TAPPED
COMMIT --- COMMITTED
4. PAST SIMPLE: affirmative, negative
or interrogative
• AFIRMATIVA:
– He painted the wall
– We woke up very early (irregular verb)
• NEGATIVA:
– He didn’t paint the wall
– We didn’t wake up very early
• INTERROGATIVA:
– Did he paint the wall?
– Did we wake up very early?
5. PAST CONTINUOUS
Para formar o passado contínuo vamos a
utilizar o verbo to be (was/were) no
passado e o verbo principal no
gerundio (ING):
Suj.+was / were + verbo+ ING
He was playing golf
They were studying
6. PAST CONTINUOUS: affirmative,
negative or interrogative
• AFIRMATIVA: suj+to be+verb+ing
– He was painting the wall
– We were waking up very early
• NEGATIVA: suj.+to be+not+verb+ing
– He wasn’t painting the wall
– We weren’t waking up very early
• INTERROGATIVA: to be+ suj+verb+ing
– Was he painting the wall?
– Were we waking up very early?

• WHEN + a ação curta no passado simples, que
interrompe a grande no passado continuo.
– John was watching TV when his friend arrived.
• WHILE + as duas ações no passado contínuo que
não se interrompem ou se cruzam.
– While I was talking on the phone, my brother was
watching TV.
