Upgrading your Reality
My Mission:
1.Explain augmented reality
2.Reveal the future of AR
3.Convince you to make an AR app (or Unity
Game)

Difference between AR/VR
VR replaces your field of vision completely.
VR can include immersive technology
products like “Leap Motion” (allows you to
track your hands) or “FOVE” (which can
track your eye movement) or Virtrix Omni
(lets you run and move in place) which all
help you feel more immersed.

Augmented Reality
AR adds a layer of 3D objects or other images
on top of what you see around you. Bringing
the digital world and imaginary elements to
the real world in a fascinating blend.
Some people think it will be more social, more
engaging.
14. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
AR and VR are Game Changers
VR and AR will be as big as TV and the
cellphone in revolutionizing the way you do
almost everything (socializing, learning,
entertaining, working and interacting with
your computer etc.)

Tech Companies
Almost every major tech company and loads of
start ups are rushing to the party.
Sony, Facebook/Oculus, Samsung, Apple,
Google, Microsoft, Magic Leap etc.
Avegant, 3DHead, Daqri, Sulon, etc.

50 Years in the Making
Ivan Sutherland - 1968
“Ultimate Display” , “Sword of Damocles”

Where are we headed?
- Computer Vision
- Movidius - gesture, eye tracking, positional tracking,
depth perception, & 3D object recognition
- EEG readers
- AR Contact Lenses
- Presence/Embodiment
- Physical and Virtual World Mix
- Not nailed to a computer - Control your computer with
voice and gesture
- Virtual things don’t cost as much money as real things

But what if I don’t know how?
1.State of not knowing is constant and never
ending in technology.
2.You will only master a sliver, not everything.
3.Speed of change requires that you look up
your questions (Google/YouTube). That is
what the seasoned pro engineers do (all day
long).
20. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
What if I am not technical?
1.Drag and Drop
2.You do not have to be a programer to make
games or apps or create incredible VR or
AR experiences.
21. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
What if I don’t have any money?
1.Never wait for money. Get in in there and
do it now.
2.If money is your excuse maybe you are in
the wrong field.
3.Free software & free education and advice
is everywhere.
22. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
But I don’t know anything about AR!
1.You are not behind, the industry is new.
a.Nobody knows what works
b.Content is king
c.Failure is almost a goal because experimentation is
all we can do at this point.

Everything you need to know to get
started making your first
augmented reality project using
an app called Aurasma.
25. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
Zenka’s Aurasma Brain Dump
1.Phone or tablet app that lets you create AR
projects and share them with the public.
a.Create using the app using stock animations
b.Create using the studio app via their website
i. Basic images or videos (can be transparent)
ii.3D objects
c.Create custom apps with the Aurasma SDK
26. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
Vocabulary
1.Trigger
2.Overlay
3.Channel/Campaign
The camera recognizes an image, called a
“trigger”, it triggers an “overlay”. You share the
content on a channel/campaign.
27. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
1. Stock phone/tablet app
Install the app and then press the
aurasma icon to get into the options.
31. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
Finding Your Content
1.Searching for your channel and hitting
“follow”
2.Having people visit a URL (found under the
share button).
46. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
Tell the Story
1.Using YouTube
2.A web page or social media
3.Images, video etc.
4.Tablets onsite ready to view
47. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
What Works to Create AR Magic?
1.Transparent
Images (.png)
1.Transparent
Video (export as a .flv and make
sure you “encode the alpha channel”.
1.3D Objects *
48. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
Getting 3D Objects into Aurasma
1.Install Blender
a. Free 3D program comparable to Maya, 3D Studio etc.
2.Get a 3D model from TurboSquid.com
a. Use search for price “0” to $15
b. Look for low poly
c. Make sure it is in a format Blender accepts: 3D Studio (3DS),
COLLADA (DAE), Filmbox (FBX), Autodesk (DXF), Wavefront
(OBJ), DirectX (x), Lightwave (LWO), Motion Capture (BVH),
SVG, Stanford PLY, STL, VRML, VRML97, X3D.
3. Export file as an Open Collada (DAE)
49. Instagram/Facebook - #hellozenka www.zenka.org
Bundle the Upload in a .tar with:
1.Open Collada from Blender
2.Music (in mp3)
3.A thumbnail named thumbnail.png
which is 256 x 256 or 728x728)
4.Put into a .tar file (GUI Tar program on
a Mac)
