3. About the Library
The library system of Playa Ancha University known as SIBUPLA is formed by the Main
Library, the Science Faculty Library and the San Felipe’s Library.
Mission of the Library
The mission of SIBUPLA is to manage and provide information resources that will help to
raise the quality of students learning; to develop in users who need it, the powers to
guarantee the autonomy in access and use of information; and contribute to communicate
the knowledge generated at the University
Information Leaflets
The Library is named after Oscar Escobar Guzman, who founded in 1948, the first library
of the Pedagogic Institute of the Universidad de Chile in Valparaiso.
Currently, and after being awarded a CREA project of the Ministry of Education, the library
possesses a great infrastructure that improves the learning of students thanks to the
redesign of the library services.
The collection amounts approximately 96.685 volumes, corresponding to 34.251 titles of
bibliographic material and 645 journals titles. It also has a collection of audiovisual and
multimedia material consisting of 5.177.
As for the electronic collections, the library possesses a subscription of 10.410 titles
between journals and e-books.
The staff currently working in the Library System is:
-Director: Pilar Fibla.
-Selection and Acquisition: Gabriela Lara.
-Information Analysis: Rosa Matucana.
-References and Periodicals: Cristian Arias.

Home Loan: It will be able to be withdrawn from the Library that bibliographical material
that is part of the General Collection. Are excluded from this service: reference collections,
unique copies and works difficult to restore.

Information Search: Guidance service for teachers and/or students who carry out
projects or are engaged in research. It consists in pointing out techniques and resources
for the recovery of updated information and/or retrospective on a topic.
Bibliographical Commutation: The bibliographical commutation is a service that allows
you to get articles, work chapters and exclusive existing documents in external information
units regardless of whether they are national or foreign.
The delivery of this material perceived an economic cost for reproduction, which must be
canceled by the service requester.
This service can be requested at any library of the SIBUPLA.
Interlibrary Loan: it is a service that allows you to access to bibliographic material
available in other libraries with which pre-established agreements exist.It can be requested

7. in any of our libraries. The libraries attached to the agreement are those of the Council of
Rectors, Universidad del Mar and Chilean Navy.
Literacy in Information: SIBUPLA has -in constant formation- a Literacy Program in
Information (ALFIN), whose objective is to develop the necessary skills to access and use
of the information in an autonomous way.
Technological Center: is located on the third floor of the Main Library and puts at
disposal of the users various facilities for the use of new technologies of information and
communication. Some of the technologies offered are:
- Computers.
- Mini-Labs.
- Preferential Mini-Lab.
- Co-Labs.
- CREA Room.
- Laptop’s Loan
Cubicle’s Loan: This service provides work rooms aimed for the study and group work.
Each cubicle consists of 6 comfortable chairs and 1 acrylic board. To make use of this
service it is necessary to be enabled in the current semester and request the reserve at
the attention desk of libraries that offer this service.
Guidelines
- Throughout the Library is forbidden to smoke, drink or eat.
- The Books on shelves are made for use within the library within an undefined amount of
time.
- To access the loan of computers or cubicles, the user must present his ID.
