2. Hello, I’m James Laminack from XYZ
Advertising Agency. I would like to talk to
you today about social media and how
Northwestern Technologies can benefit from
it. Social media provides your company with
a variety of ways to not only reach a bigger
demographic of customers, but to also
maintain a connection with your existing
clients. From email to instant messages,
Twitter to Facebook, social media has become
a virtual necessity to every business, one you
cannot afford to miss out on.
3. First email sent in 1971.
In 1978 dial-up connection was established
as a BBS (Bulletin Board System)
User nets, which provided early web
browsers, were created by Tom Truscott and
Jim Ellis in 1979.
During the 1980s, various internet services
came about to provide internet access.
In the mid- 1990s instant messaging became
available to the public and soon gained much
popularity.

into the Corporate World.
4. To see why social media is so imperative to your business, we should first take
a look at it’s history and how it has come to improve businesses worldwide.
Social media made its first appearance in the word in the form of an email
between two computers sitting right next to one another in 1971. In 1978 the
BBS or Bulletin Board System was established using phone lines as a means of
connection. The following year in 1979, the first web browsers were
distributed through the Usenet, one of the earlier bulletin boards. (O’Dell)
This type of bulletin board was created by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis as a way
to enable users to post various news to newsgroups. Throughout the 1980’s
several companies started offering internet service to consumers.
Corporations such as CompuServe and Prodigy offered customers internet
service at various rates, as expensive as $30.00 an hour after long distance
fees and taxes. (WebDesigner) During the mid 1990’s internet companies
came up with ways for their users to “chat” with one another in chat rooms
and instant message forums. This allowed users to talk to each other in real
time online. (O’Dell)
5. Between the years 2000- 2010 social networks
have become an essential part of the world’s
culture and has provided businesses a way to
promote their companies with websites such as
Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.
One of the biggest culture phenomenon of this
generation is online social networks. Facebook,
Twitter, and MySpace have dominated the
internet with opportunities for any business to
publicize themselves to the world and stay
connected with current and future consumers.

6. 38,000,000 of Americans ages 13-80 claim
social media has influenced their purchasing.
1,000,000 people read Tweets related to
customer service weekly.
132.5 million Americans currently use
Facebook. This number is expected to reach
152.1 million by 2012.
59% of internet users use one or more social
networking service
Current Social Media Landscape
into the Technology Industry
Statistics of social media and it’s
effects:
7. As you can see from the statistics above, social media is a
growing trend that is definitely here to stay. The first half of
2011 showed a growth of 14% of Americans between the ages of
13 and 80 years old are influenced by social media when deciding
on their purchases bringing the total up to 38,000,000 people
who turn to some form of social media when deciding what they
should buy. Imagine that kind of influence behind their decision
to buy your hardware and software. Of the 1,000,000 people
who read Tweets from the social networking site, Twitter, about
customer service from a company, 80% are considered critical
and negative before reading. It would be in the best interest of
your company to use Twitter for that fact alone. Tweeting about
upgrades and new products is a great way to advertise and
promote your business. Facebook is the #1 social network on the
internet with a growing popularity of 132.5 million in the United
States alone. And it’s expected to increase by nearly 20,000,000
people in the year 2012! With the 59% of internet users using
one or more social networking services, (that is up 25% from
2008) you can just imagine the influence this brings for
Northwestern Technologies should you decide to join this growing
phenomenon. (Staff)
8. 176,000,000 users in the United States watch online video
content in May 2011 alone.
In June 2011, the average daily use for mobile apps was
81 minutes. The average online was 74 minutes.
Notes: Internet videos online are a great way to
demonstrate the hardware and software to the consumer,
or to even introduce them to the benefits of your product.
In the month of May of this year, 176 million users just in
America watched online video with the average of 15.9
hours per viewer! Cell phones are for more than just
calling these days. Between texting and web, there is an
app for everything. In June of 2011 alone, the daily
average for a mobile app was 81 minutes compared to 74
minutes on the Web! (Staff)
9. Promote new upgrades or products
A way of researching feedback from consumers by using search tools or
desktop applications.
It costs nothing
Twitter is a great way for your business to not only advertise but to collect
feedback about a product or even the company itself. Twitter is a social
network in which users can text updates or “tweets” about themselves and
have those tweets posted to where their friends or followers can read them.
Twitter can be instrumental for promotional purposes as it allows your
company to endorse an upcoming product by tweeting to your followers
specific features and benefits and why they should buy that product from
Northwestern Technologies. Another benefit of Twitter is the ability to get
feedback, positive or negative, about your product or the company as a whole.
Listening to what the consumer has to say about the product would enable you
to know where you can improve as well as where you already excel. Twitter is
also free to join. (Tweeternet)

uses “tweets” to update their
followers.
10. Post products, events, and various promotions on your “wall”
Share articles and links to the public about your product
Link Twitter and Facebook
With Facebook you have the ability to answer the public’s questions when they post on
your wall
Keep track of your contacts and have the ability to research other possible business
contacts
Post surveys for feedback
Buy Facebook Ads
Set up a fan page so that others can “like” your business and reach more people
It costs nothing!
As I have previously stated, Facebook is the #1 social networking site in the world. It
was founded on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerman while he was a student at Harvard
University. What started out as a college networking site at Harvard quickly grew in
popularity to other Ivy League schools and eventually to the world. The concept of
Facebook is simple. One creates a “profile” with information about themselves or business
and post comments on their wall to which others respond. Although there are various
degrees of privacy on Facebook, it would be in your best interest to make sure the
information you share is available to everybody. You can also share links to your website
and information about your products, post surveys for feedback about Northwestern
Technology and its products, buy ads for your business, even set up a fan page for others
to “like” your business. When someone “likes” your page or comments, anybody who
looks at that individual’s wall can see that and a link to your wall is available, therefore
advertising your business further. The best thing of all, Facebook is free and boasts that it
always will be. (Facebook)
