A detailed lesson plan in Science 8
I. Objectives
At the end of the period, the student must be able to:
1. Perform the activity 1: Colors of the rainbow…colors of light
2. Identify the different colors of light after passing through the prism
3. Describe and give the reason behind the hierarchy of colors based on the observed results of the activity
4. Explain how refraction and dispersion takes place
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic : Colors Of Light
Subtopic: Colors of the rainbow…colors of light
Reference: Science Learners Module; pp.98-99
B. Concepts:
 White light is a mixture of different colors (R, O, Y, G, B, and V).
 Refraction is the bending oflight as it passes from one transparent substance/object intoanothermedium ofhigher index
of refraction.
 Dispersion is a special type of refraction wherein white light is split up into different colors
C. Materials
1. Envelope with jigsaw puzzle
2. Mirrors
3. Prisms
4. Sunlight
D. Skills :Performing, identifying, describing, explaining
E. Values Integration:
Appreciate the significant of white light as they give colors to everything they see
F. Strategies: simulation, interactive learning, probing, analyzing,
III. Learning Task
A. Routines:
Greetings
Prayer
Checking of attendance
B. Motivation
Jigsaw puzzle
Let us have a simple brain exercise. Now let us divide the class into three. (Through counting- 1-2-3).
(Ask each group who’s going to be their representative.)
We are going tosolve a puzzle. I have three envelopes, and inside them are puzzle pieces which will form an image. I want you to figure out the image and once
you’re done, paste it on the chalkboard then tell the class what the image shows. Now, may I please ask for the representatives to choose the envelope for their
group? You have 5 minutes to work on the puzzle pieces
C. Lesson Proper
1. Activity proper
Teachers’ activity Students’ response
Let us now proceed to our activity, please turn your book on pages 98-99.
What was the activity all about?
You will be performing the activity after it, I will give you time to copy the activities
found on your books
Part A; R, o, y, g, B V on paper
Procedure:
1. Place the bowl near the window. Make sure that there is plenty of sunlight
in that part of the window
2. Set the mirror partway into the water facing the light as shown in the
figure on the right.
3. Hold the piece ofpaperup to intercept the reflected beam.
4. Adjust the position of the mirror until you see color bands on the piece of
paper.
Part B: ROY G. BIV using a prism
1. Position a stack of books near the window where there is plenty of
sunlight.
2. Place a white sheet of paperon top of the stack of books.
3. On top of this sheet place the prism. Make sure that sunlight from
the window reaches the prism.
4. Position the prism until a rainbow or the colors of light appear
on the white sheet of paper.
5. Use the table below tonote the refractive indices ofthe colors of light in
acrylic or crown glass
>> the activity is all about the colors of light
>> students’ will prepare the set up
>>Positioning the stack of books on a place with direct sunlight, then
placing white sheet of paper on top of the stack of books and placing the
prism on it, making some adjustment on mirrors and prism to locate the
best view of the expected spectrum
Record all your observations in the worksheet provided

Q1. List and arrange the observed colors according tohow they appear on
the paper.
Q2. Describe the position ofthe different colors after passing through the prism
Q3. Explain the dispersion of white light. Why is the prism or water able toseparate
the colors of white light?
Q4. Compare your results in the first part with your results in the second part.
Are there any differences? What might account forthe differences?
Q5. What did you observe with the indices of refraction of the colors of light in the
acrylic prism?
>>R,O,Y,G,B,V
>>From top to bottom; R, O, Y, G, B ,V
>>The refractive index ofprism varies with the wavelength or color
of the light used. This causes the different colors of light to be
refracted differently. Then leave the prism at different angles,
creating an effect similartoa rainbow
>>Some colors visible in the prism were not observed in the water
Small value for refractive index forred
>>the refractive indices ofthe different color of light indicate that
light of different colors travels at different speeds in the prism
which accounts for the different amounts of bending. Thus blue
light with greaterrefractive index refracts more and appears at the
bottom of the red light.
3. Abstraction
Q6. How would this indices of refraction account for the arrangement of colors of light?
4. Application
On a ½ sheet of paper answerthe following questions.
1. How does dispersion of white light intodifferent colors occur?
2. What causes the hierarchy of colors when white light passes through a prism?
IV. EVALUATION
Pen and Paper Test
A. Knowledge
(Write the jumbled words on the board)
DPIERIOSNS
FRREATIOCN
1. Separation of white light into its different colors.
2. Change in direction ofa wave due to the change of its medium.
B. Process
1. Illustrate how refraction and dispersion takes place. Indicate the following terms:
 Refraction
 Dispersion
 Prism
 R,o,y,g,b,v
 White light
C. Understanding: TrueOrFalse
Write REFRACTION ifthe statement is true and DISPERSIONifit’s false
REFRACTION 1. As the speed oflight changes, a change in direction also takes place.
REFRACTION 2. Lightningcomes first before the thunder.
DISPERSION 3. Ifwhite light travels from one medium toanother medium with a higherindex ofrefraction, the speed of light stays the
same.
REFRACTION 4. White light is a mixture ofdifferent colors.
DISPERSION 5. The shorterthe wavelength, the greater the energy it has.
DISPERSION 6. The violet light from the ROYGBV has the least energy level
DISPERSION 7. The longerthe wavelength, the greaterthe energy it has.
REFRACTION 8. The air ofrefractive index of1.0003 allows the white light to travel in it’s the same speed.
REFRACTION 9. The white light bents the moment it enters a medium ofhigherrefractive index.
REFRACTION 10. The photons oflight are known as the packets ofenergy.
V. AGREEMENT:
Bring the following:
 2 sheets of paper
 A small mirror
 Flashlight
 prism
