The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) is responsible for identifying, evaluating, characterizing, conserving and utilizing livestock and poultry genetic resources in India. It was established in 1984 after early efforts in genetic research starting in the 1920s. Located in Karnal, Haryana, NBAGR works to catalogue animal breeds, conduct research on characterization, and conserve genetic material through breeding programs and a gene bank that preserves genetic material from over 30 breeds.

6. NBAGR HISTORY
1- As early as in 1926, the Royal Commission on Agriculture
recommended that livestock production in India required research efforts
in a planned and systematic manner. 2- A beginning was made when a
Genetic Research Unit was established at Imperial Veterinary Research
Institute, Izatnagar in the early forties . 3-This acted as a stimulus and
later genetic research on milk animals was started at National Dairy
Research Institute, Karnal in the late fifties. In the early sixties, , a need
was felt for an organization which could undertake the responsibility of
evaluating, certifying and conserving the rich and varied germplasm
Resources/4-National Institute of Animal Genetics in 1984 was
culmination of sustained efforts made by the leading geneticists in the
country over the years.
. Finally, the Institute was set up on 21st September, 1984 at the
campus at National Dairy Research Institute (Southern Regional Station),
Bangalore.
The Institute was shifted to Karnal on 19th July, 1985
7. The foundation stone of NBAGR/NIAG was laid by Hon’ble
Union Minister Sh. Buta Singh on 19th July, 1985. This occasion
was also graced by Dr.N.S.Randhawa, Director General, ICAR and
Secretary, DARE, Dr.R.M.Acharya, Deputy Director General
(Animal Sciences), ICAR and Dr.R.Nagarcenkar, Director,
National Dairy Research Institute. Many other dignitaries were
also present on this historic occasion.

10. OBJECTIVES
to conduct systematic surveys to characterize, evaluate and catalogue farm
livestock and poultry genetic resources and to establish their National Data
Base.
To design methodologies for ex situ conservation and in situ management and
optimal utilization of farm animal genetic resources.
To undertake studies on genetic characterisation using modern biological
techniques such as molecular cytogenetics, Immunology, DNA Fingerprinting,
RFLP analysis etc.
To conduct training programmers as related to evaluation, characterisation and
utilization of animal genetic resources.
11. Divisions and units
1-Division of Animal Genetics
The major research thrust in initial
years of National Institute of
Animal Genetics (NIAG) was on
characterization of indigenous
genetic resources using
cytogenetics and biochemical
polymorphism studies. The initial
research projects encompassed
studies of chromosomal profile of
cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pigs
and camel.
12. 2-Animal Genetic Resources
Division
In Information system on Animal Genetic
Resources of India covering all domestic
livestock and poultry species has been
developed. This database contains of
various breeds of livestock and
poultry;information on farms;semen
production; vaccine production; and give
wise information to population, animal
breeding, animal health infrastructure, animal
products like milk, meat, egg, wool, etc.
13. 3-Livestock Information
Management Section
This section is engaged in digitization
of information on animal resources and to
provide it to the users in an easily retrievable
format. This section also provides LAN,
Internet and computing facilities to the
institute. The section has also initiated
registration of livestock and poultry genetic
resources.
14. 4- DNA Finger Printing Unit
1-Breed characterization and establishment of genetic
relationships of animal genetic resources of country at
molecular level.
2-Identification of genes of economic importance/relevance
among indigenous animal genetic resources, their cloning,
characterization and mapping.
3-Human resource development in the area of molecular
genetics and biotechnology.
15. 5- National Gene Bank
National Animal Gene Bank at Bureau has been
established with the objective of maintaining the
indigenous livestock biodiversity of the country.
Under various Animal Genetic resources
conservation models, a total of 97,835 deep frozen
semen doses belonging to 257 breeding males
(Bulls/Rams/Bucks/Stallions) from 31 breeds
representing cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, camel, yak
and equine have been successfully collected and
preserved at National Gene Bank for posterity.
