The document discusses five initiatives that address different water-related issues: the Akatu Institute raises awareness of conscientious water consumption; Watersquare collects floodwater in the city square; Grundfos provides clean water through ATMs in slums; Avery Brewing improves the city's water standards; and Pandora's water-centric playlist encourages shorter showers to influence user behavior.
In July 2015, the Akatu Institute, (an NGO that encourages responsible consumption and sustainable lifestyles), launched The Voice of the Drought: a project to raise awareness of the severe water shortages due to drought in Brazil. The project centered on bespoke typography inspired by the parched soil of the Cantareira reservoir - the primary water source for São Paulo. The font was free to download and share via social media. According to the NGO, the project reached over 14 million people worldwide.

Watersquare Benthemplein is a public space in Rotterdam that automatically becomes a reservoir for excess water during heavy rain. Completed in December 2013, the plaza features three basins: one that includes a small stage, another which can be used as a skatebowl, and the largest one which features a multi-sports pitch with terraced seating for spectators. Rather than keep water tanks and canal systems hidden from view, the square has been designed so that it's clear that the three basins are also reservoirs, with drainage chutes clad in stainless steel.

June 2015 saw the launch of ATM-style water dispensers in Nairobi's Mathare slum. Four ATMs have been installed, using a smart card system to provide water to slum residents. The ATMs are designed to provide an alternative to traditional slum sources of water – which are generally polluted or expensive. People insert a smart card (which can be topped up at kiosks or via cellphone), and then specify how much water they'd like, before it's dispensed from a pipe below the ATM. The devices have been set up as part of a partnership between the Kenyan government and Danish water engineering company Grundfos.

February 2015 saw Boulder-based Avery Brewing Co. partner with the city to help meet federal clean water standards. Weak wort is a substance which can be used to remove nitrogen from wastewater, and is a byproduct of the brewing process. The initiative increases the removal of nitrogen from 50% to around 70-75%. Boulder's Nitrogen Upgrades Project costs around USD 3 million, with system at Avery's brewing costing USD 25,000.

In the midst of September 2015's severe drought, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California partnered with US-based digital radio station Pandora to launch Water Lover’s Station: a playlist that features songs solely related to water. All songs are under five minutes long, with the aim of encouraging shorter showers and the conservation of water.
