• INDD and INDT file formats supported
• Configurable Indesign Server instances
• Works with UTS Enterprise v5
• Manages all supported font types (PS, TT, OT)
FontLink Tech Details
SET THE STAGE
Promise not to bore them with a long slide deck but rather a handful of slides to set the stage for your demo
Personal introduction
Publishing background
Former Extensis customer
Extensis Agnostic vision
Today we are going to talk about Fontlink
FontLink is a new an add-on module in the Universal Type Server ecosystem.
We needed to address the publishing workflow with complete end-to-end solution
It is the only one of its kind in today's font management market.
Designed to take Publishing with Fonts from concept to completion
POLL THE AUDIENCE
As I look around the room many of you may be using UTS already (ask for a show of hands)
Acknowledge and ask how many have never heard of UTS (show of hands)
How many of you currently use IDS? Plan to use?
Acknowledge again and offer a high-level summary of UTS benefits
Emphasize points from earlier presentations (such as Frank’s compliance comments or Jim’s pub and fonts issues)
FONT SENSE
Describe the technology
Emphasize its importance within the UTS ecosystem
BENEFITS
FontLink when used with UTS, UTC and Font Sense delivers:
Leverage your existing Extensis Font Management workflow by centralizing all of your fonts into a single system
OnDemand Access – no more throwing every font at IDS to handle document font needs
100% accuracy - Providing exact font matches every time – NO SUBSTITUTES
No Dupes – Leveraging built-in IDS font handling functionality, Duplicate fonts are never an issue. The fonts are packaged to IDS’s standards and are processed separately for each job
No Rogue Fonts – Compliance is adhered to as no jobs process successfully unless the fonts are recognized by their Font Sense identification
Flexible workflows – No matter your output needs, FontLink will handle all font requests and package them for production
Reduces mundane repetitive tasks and promotes unattended automated processing
Improves publishing efficiency worldwide
Reallocates your creative resources to more business-critical tasks
DETAILS
FontLink consists of two major components (Module and Connector)
It’s built on a robust Jboss & SQL infrastructure for maximum power and thruput
Tied directly to the UTS system you currently use
Plugs into almost any complex publishing workflow system to automate the font collection process.
It applies multiple processing options for greater compatibility with 3rd party file management systems (i.e. vjoon K4)
Let’s discuss these options
OPTION #1
- The first option (that I will be demoing shortly) is what we call the Input-Output Option
This option relies on a production workflow where files are copied to the INPUT directory for processing
The FontLink Connector inspects the jobs and queries the Module for all of the required fonts
Module packages up the Document Fonts and successfully hands it off to the OUTPUT directory for the next step in the production process
Jobs that fail to process are moved to the ERROR directory and the system notifies its admin via log streaming or email notifications
Depending upon the your production flow, documents are ready to output (i.e. various resolution PDFs, file conversions for EPUB or any other production need)
OPTION #2
- The 2nd option is designed to integrate with the 3rd party content management systems you currently use
From the high level, instead of moving files from one directory to another K4 queries FontLink directly by providing the file path of the InDesign document to be handled
The fonts are packaged and handed off to the K4 System for further processing
When a job fails to process because of unavailable fonts FontLink notifies the K4 system so the font needs can be addressed and the file can be processed for its intended purpose.
Our friend from vjoon, Holger Kraemer is up next to discuss how the K4 System works with FontLink
• OS X 10.8 through 10.10 (Plans to support El Capitan later in the year)
• Windows 7 through Win 10
• Easy setup and configuration
• INDD and INDT file formats supported
• IDML and ICML workflows are being investigated
• Suitcase Fusion 6 slugged documents and above
• Configurable Indesign Server instances (starts at a single instance and runs up to
• Works with existing UTS Enterprise Edition
• Manages all supported font types (Postscript, Truetype, OpenType)
• File processing notifications (successes and errors)
