    What is this and what effect is it having on children right now?

  • 2. What is it?
    No Child Left Behind act created to make sure all children are well educated
    USA is leader in innovation – People think a good education should go along with that
    Underperforming schools need to make a change
    The NCLB act is under fire in congress
  • 3. Why is it Important?
    Small number of schools are producing half of our countries drop outs
    These schools need to change in order to continue our NCLB program
    We can’t just give up on the kids
    As a nation who is a leader in innovation around the world we can’t fall behind in our education plans
  • 4. Necessity of NCLB Act
    Increase overall education of kids
    Get better teachers
    Slow down the dropout rate

    Schools were using government money for the wrong reasons
    Families expecting more and more out of their educators
    “Learning was coming to be expected- and not simply learning for the slender elite” (Guthrie, 2002)

    NCLB Act started to change how schools were being run
    Schools are actually using government money for the right reasons
    More and more schools are getting targeted as being failures and told to change

    NCLB act will be hard to implement into the current educational system
    A lot of pressure is being put on schools and teachers although they are given no power
    Government expects so much but only offers most basic of solutions

    The government takes a bigger role in education
    Schools will acquire new standards and tests will be administered regularly
    Students will be kept to higher standards

    “The document places 100 percent of the responsibility on teachers, and gives them zero percent authority.” (Weingarten, 2010)
    Already successful schools will continue to grow while failing schools will continue to fail
    Schools who have extenuating circumstances will not be treated differently

    Now President Obama is trying to dismantle the NCLB Act that was started by Ex-President Bush
    Spellings: 'No Child Left Behind' Is A 'Toxic Brand‘
    In the process of being rewritten to adapt to newer educational needs
  • 11. Possible Changes to NCLB
    Deadline of students being proficient in math and english by 2014 would be dropped
    Successful schools would be rewarded for keeping their students well educated
    “Focus on the lowest-performing 5 percent of schools” (Abramson, 2010)
