Frederick Herzberg developed the two-factor theory of motivation which proposes that there are hygiene factors and motivator factors that influence employee satisfaction and motivation. Hygiene factors like salary and working conditions do not motivate employees but their absence can cause dissatisfaction, while motivator factors such as achievement and recognition provide job satisfaction. Herzberg developed this theory based on his research and experience as a psychologist studying work motivation.
