2. Ground Water
Groundwater is rain water or water
from surface water bodies, like lakes
or streams, that soaks into the soil and
bedrock and is stored underground in
the tiny spaces between rocks and
particles of soil.
3. Ground water origin and
occurrence
Groundwater is water that occurs below the Earth's surface at
depths where all the pore (open) spaces in the soil, sediment , or
rock are completely filled with water.
In tapping ground water, a well that is drilled passes different
zones namely:
Unsaturated Zone
• The thickness of this zone depends on climate,
elevation, seasons of the year and area-wide
water withdrawals through pumping.
Saturated Zone
• a zone where all of the openings are filled with
water.
4.
5. EXTRACTION
a common way of ground water extraction is
through WELLS.
The productivity of the wells depends on the
area where the well was built or being buried
within. A well maybe classified as Artesian or
a Flowing Artesian Well.
6. GROUND WATER
CONTAMINATION
Though ground water is not as vulnerable as
that of surface water, it does not mean that
it is impenetrable to contaminants.
Contaminants can still reach wells and
therefore households. Any chemicals that are
easily soluble and penetrate the soil are prime
candidates for groundwater pollutants.
