2. Introduction to the Project This semester we will be working on a project to help students understand the concept of solubility. Our objective is to teach students what substances are soluble or insoluble when mixed with water. Our standards and objectives from ALEX are as follows: Standard: Classify substances as soluble or insoluble in water. Objective: Add different substances to a container of water and allow students to observe whether they dissolve, settle, or separate in the water. Understanding solubility is an important concept. We hope to make this learning experience fun through a project designed to mix substances such as salt, sand, and oil with water and observing what happens. Through discussion and observation students will learn and understand the meaning of soluble and insoluble substances and be able to apply this concept to everyday situations.
3. Curriculum Framing Questions Our solubility project will focus on these main questions: Why is it important to know whether solutions will dissolve in water? What can we do to directly tie our experiment to a real life situation? How do people use solubility everyday? What is the definition of soluble? What is the definition of non-soluble? How many solutions in the experiment dissolve in water?
4. What is PBL? You may be wondering what PBL is. It stands for Project-Based Learning. It is the use of projects to help the students become more engaged in what they are learning. The teacher acts as a facilitator while guiding the students through the project. It helps students practice their 21st Century Skills as well as other skills they may not normally be able to utilize in the classroom, i.e. knowing how to use a computer program well. PBL allows students to do work that can make a difference by allowing community involvement. This sense of purpose helps to drive their motivation and involvement. We will be having a guest speaker to talk about solubility as well as brainstorm as a class discussion how we can use our project to better the community around us.
5. Our Roles As the teachers, we have made sure to prepare for this project to the best of our ability. We have prepared a timeline and implementation plan that we will follow throughout the project. We have planned tasks around school holidays and major field trips to ensure maximum attendance. We will also have an online database for students to access if they miss an activity.
6. Timeline Here is our plan for the project. This will help give you an idea of the requirements as well.
7. What you can do to help Check our class website for important dates of project activities. Let us know if your child will be missing on one of these activity days so we can help make sure they catch up! Also, we always appreciate volunteers helping out with the projects! If you would like to help, please contact us. It’s a great way to see first-hand what your child is working on in our classroom! The solubility project will conclude with a presentation by each group. Parents are encouraged to attend. If you are unable to attend, we will be recording the presentations and will upload them to the class website for you to view with your child at home.
8. Student’s Responsibility Since this project is based around group work, attendance is key. The group relies on each piece of information gathered by each group member. If the student expects to miss an activity, it is their responsibility to get their work to their group. A great way to do this is to access the group database. The link will be posted on the class website when the project starts.
9. Questions? If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. The best way to do so is through the “Contact” page on our class website. We will also have all assignments for the project posted on the website. Follow this link to access the class website.
