BDPA has grown into a national organization with over 40 chapters chartered throughout the United States. Organization membership is open to all with expressed interest in the information technology industry regardless of race, sex, religious beliefs or national origin. BDPA Education & Technology Foundation (BETF) BETF is a 501 (c) 3 educational organization. Gifts and contributions to BETF are tax deductible. Most BDPA local chapters carry 501 (c) 6 status. Since 1975, BDPA has educated and trained minority professionals working in the information technology industry. BDPA has successfully reached out to many, and has provided opportunities through networking, educational programs, monthly seminars, monthly workshops and annual conferences. Educational and technical opportunities still reach the African American community at a slow pace. BDPA has a larger task and broader range of people (especially youth) to reach. Recognizing the need for accelerated action, the BETF was established. 3

    • “Host to tHe 2011 NBDPA tecHNology coNfereNce & cAreer fAir” (HiltoN cHicAgo August 3-6) BDPA Student Testimonial I was asked to join the BDPA HSCC in 2008, and then again in 2009, but ended up not going each time (for various reasons). Finally, through some stroke of good fortune, I found myself accepting my friend’s invitation to the BDPA Chicago Chapter’s HSCC “meet and greet,” and liked what I saw. The year was, of course, 2010. The first seminar we had was pretty interesting to say the least, especially when I met up with other students from around Chicago, many of which shared several of my thoughts and opinions. Now, if one were to ask me “Hey Tre, what did the BDPA give to you,” I’d almost certainly respond with the phrase “a network.” I was exposed to places and people I would have never come across otherwise, and I’m infinitely stronger for it. After participating in seminar after seminar with the same group of acquaintances for months, we all became great friends, yes, but it was deeper than that. It was more along the lines of a brotherhood, at least personally. Most of us still communicate to this day (to this very minute, in fact!), and have since come together to reawaken a small (for now) freelancing organization known as Dark Gray—now with a total of seventeen members (nine active), seven of which are BDPA Chicago Chapter 2010 HSCC Alumni and two of which who are certified in various web and application/system-side programming languages. Our current project is http://dignityice.com. My experiences during the 2010 NBDPA Conference and the ensuing events have not only assured me of my skills, but gave me enough confidence to pass the Zend PHP Certification Exam—after only three days of study—and become a Zend Certified Engineer on my first try at the age of 17 (with hopes of becoming Zend Framework Certified by 2011). Furthermore, the NBDPA Conference and my experience under the BDPA Chicago Chapter as a whole has inspired me to go forward and teach what I know to those around me. Unfortunately, now that I’m staying at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, I cannot partake in the BDPA Chicago Chapter HSCC program. Instead, I now fall under the mantle of the BDPA Atlanta Chapter. The lifelong friendships I formed during my year at the BDPA Chicago Chapter HSCC program have introduced to me the best and most trusted future business associates, colleagues, and supporters I’ll ever know. Despite everything, none of this would have been possible without the HSCC program, and the people that made it work, including: Gibran McDuffie, Coach Audra Anderson, Coach Bryan Moore, Mr. Eric Dortch, Pamela Norfleet, the Chicago and National Presidents, and all of the other volunteers and BDPA members that made this experience enjoyable. Thanks! Bernard Dickens 9
